Role overview
Our client is an international commodity trading business focused on importing and exporting agricultural products and is expanding its footprint in Ghana. They are looking to hire a Supply Chain Manager to lead end-to-end operations from vessel discharge at the Port of Tema through warehouse handling and road delivery to industrial customers. This position is vital to the success of the trading operation from the first day.
Vessel reception and discharge
- Take charge of planning and supervising discharge activities for bulk or bagged vessels carrying soya, wheat and wheat bran at the Port of Tema.
- Work with port authorities, shipping agents, consignees and freight forwarders to keep vessel calls moving efficiently.
- Verify incoming cargo against compliance requirements, including quantity, quality, sanitary condition, customs clearance and phytosanitary paperwork from the relevant Ghanaian authorities.
- Control discharge timing to prevent demurrage and reduce vessel idle-time costs.
- Arrange weighing, sampling and laboratory testing for measures such as moisture, protein and impurities through approved labs.
Warehouse and inventory control
- Oversee storage activities for agricultural commodities in silos, warehouses and dry stores, ensuring preservation standards are maintained.
- Put stock control procedures in place and monitor receipts, issues, FIFO rotation, periodic stock counts, as well as loss and shortage handling.
- Improve use of storage space and forecast requirements based on expected cargo arrivals.
- Maintain complete batch traceability for soya, wheat and wheat bran from receipt through to final delivery.
- Ensure warehouses operate in compliance with safety, food hygiene and Ghanaian regulatory requirements.
Transport and distribution
- Plan and optimise road transport from the Port of Tema and warehouse locations to customers such as flour mills, animal feed producers and distributors in Ghana and neighbouring markets.
- Assess and manage local logistics partners including hauliers, truck operators and stevedores.
- Coordinate deliveries so contractual timelines and quantities are met.
- Reduce transport spend by negotiating pricing and improving route efficiency.
Cross-functional coordination and reporting
- Partner with Finance and Commercial teams on stock flow planning and invoicing.
- Monitor logistics performance indicators such as cost per tonne, stock rotation time, loss rate, demurrage and customer service level.
- Lead and support Ghana-based operational teams, including team leaders, storekeepers, forklift operators and port equipment drivers.
- Prepare recurring operational updates for management and headquarters covering stock position, movement flows and logistics costs.
Candidate profile
The role calls for a hands-on logistics leader with strong experience in bulk agricultural commodity movements, particularly within a Ghanaian port setting. The successful candidate should be comfortable managing teams and coordinating multiple operational stakeholders in a demanding environment.
