This opportunity is posted on behalf of a partner organisation, which will handle the application review and all follow-up steps. The partner is hiring a Senior Data Scientist in Ireland for a short-term remote engagement focused on building an advanced AI-driven document intelligence platform.

The role is centred on solving complex, real-world data problems by combining machine learning, generative AI, and scientific data analysis. You will help turn unstructured documents into searchable and useful knowledge, design scalable AI systems, create production-ready ML pipelines, and work with cloud infrastructure to deliver meaningful outcomes. The position offers substantial technical ownership, exposure to modern AI tools, and the chance to contribute to innovative work at the intersection of AI and scientific research.

Key responsibilities

• Create, refine, and improve advanced machine learning and deep learning models that can extract, interpret, and structure information from scanned and unstructured PDF files, including complex scientific content.
• Develop and expand LLM-based applications using vector databases and retrieval-augmented generation methods to support semantic search and intelligent document discovery.
• Manage the complete machine learning lifecycle, from data preparation and feature engineering through training, validation, deployment, monitoring, and ongoing optimisation.
• Use domain knowledge to translate scientific or chemical information into machine-readable formats that enable deeper analytics and AI-powered insights.
• Deliver secure, scalable, production-grade AI solutions in AWS environments while maintaining performance, reliability, and long-term supportability.
• Partner with software engineers, data engineers, and subject matter experts to embed AI capabilities into production systems and ensure solutions align with business goals.
• Keep track of new developments in AI, machine learning, and document intelligence, and apply relevant advancements to strengthen platform capabilities.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of professional experience as a Data Scientist building machine learning solutions for production use.
• A strong academic or professional foundation in Chemistry, Cheminformatics, or a closely related scientific field, with experience handling complex scientific datasets.
• Advanced Python skills and substantial hands-on experience with AWS services such as SageMaker, Lambda, S3, EC2, or equivalent cloud tools.
• Practical experience building solutions with large language models, including prompt design, fine-tuning, API integration, or retrieval-augmented generation.
• Experience working with vector databases such as Pinecone, Milvus, Weaviate, Qdrant, or similar semantic search systems.
• Strong knowledge of machine learning and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, or comparable tools.
• Prior exposure to computer vision, OCR, Document AI, or intelligent document processing is a strong advantage.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork abilities for cross-functional collaboration.
• Availability to start right away is preferred.
• Comfort working remotely during Central European Time hours.
