About the role
The Ministry of Education New Zealand is seeking a permanent, full-time Psychologist based in Taupō, Bay of Plenty. This role sits within a community-oriented Learning Support team focused on improving learning, wellbeing, and social inclusion for children and young people with additional learning needs.
The position is suited to someone who enjoys working in a close-knit environment and contributing specialist psychological expertise across educational settings. Applications are also welcomed from people who have recently completed, or are close to completing, their psychology internship.
What you will do
- Look for patterns and factors that may be affecting learning, behaviour, and wellbeing.
- Strengthen inclusive practice in early learning centres, schools, and related education environments.
- Offer expert advice and practical support to schools, teachers, and whānau/families.
- Build capability in the people and settings best placed to support children and young people.
- Carry out in-depth specialist assessment and analysis to inform evidence-based interventions planned with others.
- Work collaboratively as part of a trans-disciplinary team when a child or young person has complex needs.
About the team and environment
Learning Support is part of Te Mahau | Education Services, a frontline Ministry group that provides leadership and integrated support across the education sector. The team works closely with families, whānau, caregivers, schools, and early childhood educators in English and Māori medium settings, as well as other agencies, to help learners reach their potential and participate fully.
This role is office-based at the Taupō office and offers a lifestyle and work-life balance opportunity. Candidates living in South Waikato, Rotorua, or the wider Bay of Plenty who can commute may also be suitable.
Pay and employment details
This is a permanent, full-time position. The salary range is NZD 85,416 to NZD 126,000 per year, plus KiwiSaver. The final salary will depend on the successful applicant’s skills and experience.
What you will bring
- A master’s-level qualification and a Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Psychology, or an equivalent qualification.
- Registration as a psychologist in New Zealand under the Health Practitioners Competency Assurance Act, along with a current practising certificate.
- The ability to turn specialist expertise into clear, usable guidance.
- Experience working across multi-agency and trans-disciplinary settings, including coordinating service delivery.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with learners, families, and teachers in varied settings.
- An understanding of, and commitment to applying, the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tangata whenuatanga.
- A full driver licence, as travel is part of the role.
- Willingness to follow Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.
