Role overview

Freedom Network Services is hiring an experienced Operational Estimator in Scotland on a permanent basis. The role sits within the recently awarded SSE LCD Contract and supports both existing and future SSE/SPEN frameworks. This position focuses on creating detailed estimates that align with supplied documents, technical standards, and client expectations.

In this role, you will lead the surveying and pricing of new connection projects, producing accurate, customised estimates quickly and efficiently. A major part of the job is making sure SSEN and SPEN enquiries are handled promptly, precisely, and in line with the required specification.

The position involves working on local DNO networks across LV, 11kV, 33kV and up to 132kV, including ICP and IDNO connections. Typical work includes street works and traffic management, all civil works such as directional drilling and deep excavations, network investigations, customer interruptions, and knowledge of distribution systems, points of connection, and metering.

Key duties

  • Prepare quotations from drawings and specifications within set timeframes.
  • Carry out site surveys and assessments, identifying risks, practical issues, and possible financial delivery impacts.
  • Review options and assess alternatives where needed.
  • Check SSEN/SPEN, third-party, and engineering documents for accuracy and completeness.
  • Work with procurement to approach subcontractors and suppliers and secure competitive quotes.
  • Prepare formal quotation packs and supporting documentation.
  • Coordinate with operational colleagues throughout the estimating process.
  • Attend handover meetings when needed and clearly explain scope, estimate details, clarifications, and assumptions.

What the role requires

You should bring strong knowledge of underground and overhead EHV, HV, and LV switchgear, as well as installations, cabling, overhead conductors, terminations, and metering. Experience in estimating or a delivery-focused role with exposure to a broad range of DNO, IDNO, and ICP connection projects is important.

Applicants should have formal training in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a closely related discipline. You will also need a proven background in technical problem-solving and cost building within electrical and civil engineering environments, along with a full driving licence and DNO experience, particularly around procurement processes.

Benefits

  • Company commercial vehicle.
  • Salary sacrifice car scheme, including hybrid/electric vehicle options.
  • Pension scheme with a leading provider and employer contributions of up to 8%.
  • Up to 25 days of holiday plus bank holidays.
  • Personal wellbeing and volunteer days.
  • Private medical insurance.
  • 24/7 employee assistance support throughout the year, including counselling and legal guidance.
  • Flexible benefits such as dental insurance, gym memberships, Give As You Earn, travel insurance, and tax-free bikes.
  • Personal development programme.
