Role overview
Hendrick is seeking a Junior Interior Designer to contribute to interior design work from the earliest programming and space-planning stages through construction documentation and construction administration. This position offers hands-on exposure across the full design workflow, with close collaboration on interior architecture and furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E). You will help produce contract documentation, presentation assets, and visual materials that clearly convey design direction, while also assisting in the research and selection of finishes, materials, furniture, and lighting with an emphasis on sustainable choices.
The role suits someone who is imaginative, inquisitive, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing several assignments at once in a fast-moving studio environment focused on strong design quality and teamwork.
What you will do
- Support the interior design workflow under regular supervision while working toward firm standards, project goals, quality expectations, and sustainability objectives.
- Develop a basic understanding of the architectural design process and how interior concepts fit within it.
- Contribute to multiple projects at the same time across programming, space planning, concept design, schematic design, design development, construction documentation, and construction administration.
- Produce contract documentation such as floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, millwork drawings, furniture layouts, finish plans, and schedules with a focus on precision and coordination.
- Build presentation decks, visual materials, and models that help communicate design ideas to clients and project teams.
- Research vendors and manufacturers and assist with selecting colors, finishes, materials, furniture, and lighting, especially options that support sustainability goals.
- Approach assignments creatively while keeping work organized, timely, and consistent, and perform self-checks to maintain accuracy and compliance.
- Take part in design reviews, charrettes, and pin-ups, maintaining clear communication with the broader team.
- Support studio and project activities by working with partners and consultants when needed and by actively asking questions to deepen industry knowledge.
Required qualifications and skills
- Working knowledge of Building Information Modeling (BIM), with Revit skills at a novice to intermediate level preferred.
- Functional AutoCAD experience is required.
- Foundational understanding of programming, interior site analysis, and planning.
- Experience with concept development, early design studies, and preparation of contract documents.
- Ability to perform field observations and take accurate measurements.
- Capability to specify furniture and interior products.
- Comfort using Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite, including presentation tools such as InDesign and Photoshop.
- Experience with architectural visualization tools; Enscape is preferred.
- Understanding of building codes, including ADA requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design or Architecture from an accredited institution.
- Entry-level experience profile: 0–3 years of relevant experience.
Physical requirements
- Must be able to sit or stand for long periods while working on design tasks and presentations.
- Should be able to move around construction sites for observations and measurements, including bending, kneeling, and reaching.
- Needs visual stamina for extended work on detailed drawings and computer screens.
- Manual dexterity is needed for model-making, handling materials, and using design tools and software.
- May occasionally need to lift materials or equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Protective gear may be required during site visits and fieldwork.
