Field Applications Scientist

Overview

Join a global science and technology organization focused on helping customers improve health, safety, and environmental outcomes. In this role, you will act as a technical expert and trusted advisor for analytical and scientific solutions, supporting customers and internal teams with product demonstrations, application guidance, and training.

You will work across several technology platforms and contribute both before and after the sale by helping customers improve workflows, solve technical problems, and get the most value from the instruments and solutions they use. The position also involves close collaboration with sales, marketing, research and development, and product management to support customer success and business growth.

Work Schedule

This is a standard Monday to Friday position.

Environmental Conditions

The role is based in a laboratory and office environment and may require some use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses, gowning, gloves, lab coat, and ear plugs.

Key Responsibilities

You will provide technical support, product demonstrations, and training to customers and sales teams while serving as a scientific resource across pre-sales and post-sales activities.

The role includes developing new applications, troubleshooting complex technical issues, and helping customers optimize their methods and workflows.

You will build strong working relationships with customers and internal stakeholders, support cross-functional initiatives, and contribute to solution-driven business outcomes.

Requirements

The position calls for an advanced degree with at least 3 years of relevant experience, or a bachelor's degree with at least 5 years of experience in analytical instrumentation and applications.

Preferred study areas include chemistry, biochemistry, materials science, molecular biology, or a related field.

Experience with chromatography and/or mass spectrometry instruments from Thermo Fisher is highly desirable.

We are looking for someone with strong technical troubleshooting and method development skills, confident communication abilities, and the ability to present effectively to both technical and non-technical groups.

You should be able to work independently and in collaboration with others, manage multiple priorities, and handle project work in a structured, results-focused setting.

Additional expectations include proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant scientific software, a strong customer service mindset, relationship-building skills, willingness to travel up to about 50% within New Zealand and other regions when required, and the ability to work within direct and matrix organizations.

A valid driver's license and passport are required. You should also be ready to learn quickly, take on new challenges, and follow occupational health and safety procedures to maintain a safe workplace.
