Role overview
This position is for a customer delivery driver based at Crewe Extra, representing Tesco on the road and delivering shopping directly to customers’ homes. The work is practical, customer-facing, and varied, with every shift bringing different situations and needs. Alongside driving, the job is about providing helpful service, building positive customer relationships, and supporting shoppers with care and professionalism.
Working hours and availability
The role includes an availability pattern across the week, and scheduled hours will be placed within these windows. The current preferred availability is:
- Sunday: 09:00 to 19:00
- Monday: 13:00 to 23:00
- Tuesday: 19:00 to 23:00
- Thursday: 13:00 to 23:00
New starters are normally offered at least 16 guaranteed hours each week, though there may also be options for people who want fewer hours, down to a minimum of 12. Shift times are shared with 3 weeks’ notice. Tesco is open to discussing availability where it closely matches the stated windows, even if it is not an exact fit.
What the job involves
As a customer delivery driver, you will be the friendly face of Tesco during home deliveries. The role combines driving, customer service, and practical responsibility. You will spend much of the day working independently while also having access to support from managers and colleagues at the base.
Key duties

- Keep the van, trays, and working area clean, tidy, and organised.
- Ensure trays are processed through the tray wash system.
- Load the van correctly and check that it is roadworthy before setting off.
- Talk through order changes with customers, including missing items and substitutions.
- Offer refunds for items customers are not happy with.
- Treat products and deliveries with care, as if they were your own.
- Explain clearly that substitutions will not cost the customer extra.
- Call the customer if you are arriving early.
- Contact the store or centre if you expect to be 30 minutes or more late.
- Leave the back yard clean and free from rubbish, and pick up litter when noticed.
What Tesco is looking for
The ideal candidate works well with others, helps build a strong team atmosphere, and contributes to a positive store environment. You should be warm, approachable, and attentive when dealing with both customers and colleagues. The role also suits someone who can adapt quickly, stays energetic, and is keen to improve how things are done by sharing ideas with the manager and team.
Pay
The hourly pay starts at £14.18 and rises to £15.45 for stores located inside the M25. Depending on location, extra payments may also apply.
Benefits
- Holiday entitlement starts at 20 days plus a personal day, increasing to 22 days after 12 months, in addition to bank holidays.
- Flexible working requests can be made from day one.
- Colleague Clubcard savings include 10% off, rising to 15% at payday weekends, with potential annual savings of up to £2,000 and an extra card for family outside your household.
- Access to free wellbeing support and resources for mental, physical, and lifestyle needs.
- Life cover worth five times pay, plus an award-winning pension with matched contributions up to 7.5%.
- A choice of benefits, including discounts, shares, and cycle-to-work options.
- Uniform is provided, along with policies that support colleagues through important life events.
- Access to colleague networks that bring together people from different backgrounds.
