Role overview
The City of Winnipeg is hiring a Storekeeper 4 for the Public Works - Winnipeg Fleet Management Agency. This permanent, full-time role is based at 1277 Pacific Avenue in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The position sits within a large warehouse and yard operation and focuses on receiving, storing, issuing, distributing and controlling inventory such as materials, tools and equipment. The work combines manual handling with clerical and inventory-control responsibilities, and may include buying stock and emergency non-stock items in line with city policy.
This role also requires safe work practices, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work with minimal supervision while contributing to stock planning, layout decisions and internal inventory procedures.
Compensation and benefits

Key duties
- Receive orders, remove stock as required, verify commodity, size and lot details, and update stock records according to procedure.
- Maintain inventory controls to reduce stock shortages while keeping stock levels aligned with operational and economic needs.
- Set and maintain min-max stock levels alongside customer management requirements.
- Purchase stocked items and urgent non-stock items following approved procedures.
- Receive goods, unpack deliveries, compare packing slips to received items and record incoming materials.
- Follow safety rules and ensure all work is carried out using safe methods.
- Perform cycle counts and spot checks on inventory items.
- Put materials into stock, prepare shipments and handle loading and unloading.
- Locate and move materials within the yard and warehouse.
- Operate loading equipment such as a forklift and may assist with or oversee receiving, sorting and storage activities.
- Carry out general caretaking tasks in the store or yard area.
- Complete other related work consistent with the classification.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a Grade 12 diploma, GED, or an equivalent mix of education and experience, along with three years of warehouse inventory experience covering planning, purchasing, shipping, receiving, sourcing, storing and distribution.
Other required strengths include knowledge of inventory systems and principles, safe work practices, technical terminology used with clients, clerical store functions, basic computer use, and mathematical skills for ordering and accounting for tools, materials and equipment.
The ideal candidate can organize work effectively, train or supervise subordinate staff, work independently with sound judgment, communicate clearly in speaking and writing, maintain positive working relationships across the organization and with the public, and work accurately with close attention to detail.
A Forklift Operator Certificate is required or must be obtained within six months. Experience with purchasing and inventory control modules/systems is also needed.
Applicants educated outside Canada must provide a recognized Canadian academic assessment report proving equivalency to the minimum qualification.
Employment conditions
The selected candidate must remain legally eligible to work in Canada. If working on a permit, the permit must stay valid throughout employment.
A Police Information Check satisfactory to the employer is required at the candidate’s expense.
A valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License is mandatory.
The role requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs., work at different heights, work outdoors in all weather, and stand or walk for long periods.
Schedule and reporting
Working hours are Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The role reports to the Supervisor of Stores. The employee group is C.U.P.E.
