About Mythwright
Mythwright is an independent games publisher founded by experienced industry professionals with a strong history of shipping successful titles. The company places a high value on helping creative teams succeed and on building durable, trust-based partnerships shaped by shared goals.
The publisher’s portfolio is centred on Steam and focuses on simulation, management, strategy, and closely related niche genres for dedicated player communities. The aim is to support developers, respect creative direction, and release games that build long-term loyalty.
Role summary
Mythwright is hiring a Senior Designer to contribute to a simulation game. This is a very hands-on position, with most of the work taking place directly inside the build. You will take ownership of important systems and features, guiding them from early prototype stage through to refined implementation while balancing creativity, readability, and scalability so the team can iterate quickly and maintain clean systems.
You will collaborate with a compact, multidisciplinary team to create inventive and highly replayable simulation experiences for a clearly defined genre audience.
This role is a 12-month contract and can be performed remotely from within the UK or Europe.
Key responsibilities
In this role, you will be expected to lead major gameplay areas, refine them through testing, and work closely with other disciplines to keep development moving smoothly.
- Take end-to-end ownership of core gameplay systems and features, from early concept work through to implementation.
- Work directly in Unreal Engine to prototype, tune, balance, and iterate on design solutions.
- Create fast, low-cost prototypes that help validate ideas early.
- Shape systems that are engaging, easy to understand, and able to scale well over time.
- Maintain ownership of assigned features through to release.
- Think about both immediate gameplay feel and longer-term progression.
- Focus design effort on the elements that deliver the greatest value to players.
- Use playtesting and feedback loops to improve the game continuously.
- Identify what is and is not working, then prioritise the changes that will have the biggest impact.
- Iterate quickly based on player behaviour, observations, and team feedback.
- Communicate findings, design changes, and the reasoning behind them clearly across the team.
- Work closely with Art, Engineering, and Production to keep ideas aligned from concept to implementation.
- Produce clear design documentation, prototypes, and implementation notes.
- Raise design issues early and help solve them collaboratively.
Requirements
To be successful, you should bring proven senior-level design experience and be comfortable working in a practical, build-focused environment.
- Demonstrated experience as a Senior Designer, or in a similar role, on shipped games; simulation experience is preferred.
- Strong background in designing and owning gameplay systems, mechanics, progression, or feature sets from concept through implementation in Unreal Engine.
- Confidence working hands-on in-engine, with the ability to prototype, tune, and iterate efficiently.
- Solid understanding of systemic design, player motivation, balancing, and long-term engagement.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills across design, art, engineering, and production.
- A practical mindset that prioritises what best advances the game and improves the player experience.
- Experience using playtesting, feedback, and data to improve features and outcomes.
- Strong enthusiasm for simulation games and for turning good design into a compelling player experience.

This is a remote contract role open to candidates located in the UK and Europe only.
