Role overview
Join The AA as a Roadside Rescue Mechanic in Southampton and help motorists get moving again when breakdowns happen. You’ll be the reassuring first point of contact for members, delivering support in all kinds of weather and across different locations.
This position offers a guaranteed first-year earning of £40,270 inclusive of allowances, with potential on-target earnings of up to £60,000 for strong performers.
Working pattern and hours
You will work an average of 40 hours per week. Several shift pattern options are available, allowing you to select a schedule that better fits your personal and professional life. The number of rest days and the length of each shift depend on the pattern you choose.
Each year, you can choose your standby hours preference to help balance lifestyle and work commitments.
What you will do
- Begin and end your working day from home, with paid time counted from the moment you enter your van until you return.
- Work on your own across different roadside settings while still contributing to a collaborative support network.
- Use technical know-how and clear, customer-friendly communication to deliver a positive service experience.
- Diagnose and resolve breakdown issues at the roadside, applying a calm and practical approach to a variety of situations.
What you need
- A full NVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, or an equivalent qualification backed by relevant experience.
- A full Category B driving licence with no more than 6 penalty points.
- Comfort with technology and a willingness to adapt to new tools and systems.
- Availability for shift work, including evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays.
Benefits and rewards
- 23 days of annual leave, increasing with service, plus the option to buy extra holiday.
- A Worksave pension plan with employer contributions of up to 7%.
- Free AA breakdown cover from day one, along with a 50% discount for family and friends.
- Discounts on AA insurance products, including car and home cover.
- Access to an employee discount programme, including car salary sacrifice and savings on healthcare, retail, holidays and more.
- Company-funded life assurance.
- Learning and development opportunities to help support career growth.
- Employee Assistance Programme and 24/7 remote GP support for you and your family.
Equal opportunity and hiring process
The AA welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and aims to create an inclusive workplace where people can be themselves and succeed in their roles.
The hiring process includes a short online application, followed by an online interview if shortlisted. Standard pre-employment checks are required, including reference checks as well as credit and criminal record screening.
Pay details
Guaranteed first-year earnings include the applicable location allowance and, in eligible locations, a £2,000 sign-on bonus. On-target earnings include standby pay, performance incentive and overtime, and will vary depending on performance and hours worked.
