Role Overview
National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is looking for a Railroad Flagger in Albany, Georgia. This full-time field role is focused on protecting crews working near tracks by managing train movements and applying federal railroad safety standards. The position supports railroads, transit agencies, state transportation work, and outside contractors.
Reporting Line and Travel
This position reports to the District Manager. Substantial travel is part of the job, with travel expected about 50% to 85% of the time on average. The role may also require extended periods away from home, including stays lasting several months.
Compensation
Pay is set at $25 to $37, depending on experience.
Required Background
Candidates need at least 2 years of experience with a Class 1 railroad, regional short line, transit system, state DOT rail division, railroad supplier, railroad contractor, or railroad consultant. Experience in the Maintenance of Way (MOW) department is preferred.
What You Will Do
- Oversee site activities and help keep work moving safely and efficiently.
- Stay in constant contact with dispatchers, train crews, railroad personnel, and contractors.
- Lead pre-work safety briefings before field operations begin.
- Apply and enforce railroad, state, and federal safety requirements.
- Verify that contractors have completed the required training.
- Identify and correct rule breaches when they occur.
- Prepare daily activity reports for the work performed.
- Maintain on-track safety in line with federal regulations.
Skills and Qualifications
The role calls for strong organization, close attention to detail, clear communication, and comfort with railroad safety practices and field operations. Candidates should be capable of working with standard digital tools and mobile devices, and able to maintain professional client relationships.
Work Conditions
This is a field-based position. The successful candidate must be able to communicate fluently in English, travel or drive long distances, stand for long periods, walk on uneven terrain, and work outdoors in challenging weather. The work environment may be dusty and noisy, and the role requires good near, far, color, and peripheral vision. Physical demands include lifting up to 50 pounds.
Education
A high school diploma or an equivalent credential is required.
