About the role
Northumbria University is looking for physiotherapists to join its Northumbria Physio Clinic, delivering high-quality musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapy to student athletes while also contributing to the education of physiotherapy students in a placement-based learning setting.
The clinic is located at City Campus in Newcastle and serves students, staff, and the wider university community with accessible MSK and sports physiotherapy. It functions both as a patient-facing service and as an active placement site, where physiotherapy students work alongside qualified clinicians and gain practical experience in a real clinical environment.
Working closely with NU Sport, the clinic supports scholar athletes and other sporting participants, including regional, national, and international external partners such as i2i Football Academy Scholars, along with recreational athletes and university staff. The service forms part of the university’s wider health, wellbeing, and academic mission.
The university supports a large athlete population of around 200 sport scholars, as well as TASS-funded performers. These students compete across BUCS and performance sport programmes in team, contact, individual, and endurance sports, often while managing demanding training and academic schedules. The role therefore requires evidence-based, holistic physiotherapy with a strong focus on injury prevention, rehabilitation, concussion management, and safe return-to-performance planning, delivered in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
In this post, you will be based in the newly refurbished physiotherapy clinic and also work across the university’s sports facilities at City and Coach Lane campuses. Alongside direct clinical care for student athletes, you will support physiotherapy students on placement and contribute to their professional development within this innovative service.
There are 3 part-time vacancies available.
Team and working environment
You will be part of the physiotherapy academic and placement team within the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation, working closely with coaches and wider multidisciplinary colleagues who support student athletes. You will receive support from experienced physiotherapy educators to help ensure an excellent student experience. The clinic is building a team of specialist physiotherapists, creating opportunities for peer support among professionals with a shared interest in musculoskeletal and sport physiotherapy.
You will work from the refurbished physiotherapy clinic at City Campus and across Northumbria Sport facilities at both City and Coach Lane campuses.
Candidate profile
Successful applicants will hold a BSc (Hons) or MSc (pre-registration) in Physiotherapy, have current HCPC registration, CSP membership, and professional indemnity cover. You should bring solid experience in a musculoskeletal setting, with up-to-date knowledge of assessment, treatment, management, and prevention approaches.
The role also calls for experience working in a multidisciplinary team and an understanding of the physiotherapist’s contribution to student athlete support. Experience helping others learn is important, including confidence in supervising and developing student physiotherapists on placement.
Strong communication skills, the ability to manage an independent caseload, and effective time management and prioritisation are essential. You should also be committed to continuous professional development, accurate record keeping in line with professional standards, and holding a current annual Basic Life Support qualification.
Additional information
This position is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, so the successful candidate will need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
The university welcomes applicants from the UK and internationally. Relocation assistance information is available.
To apply, candidates are asked to submit a covering letter and a CV.
