Matchday Stewards

About the role

West Ham United is seeking upbeat and dependable people to join its matchday stewarding team across venues in East London and Essex. The role offers a chance to start or build on a career in stewarding while representing a major football club and helping create a safe, friendly and enjoyable experience for supporters, players, staff and guests.

Pay

Pay is based on the London Living Wage.

Working pattern and contract

This position is offered on a zero-hours casual worker contract. Working times are average examples and can change depending on fixtures and events.

• Chadwell Heath: Monday to Friday, 16:00 to 21:00; Saturday, 08:00 to 17:00
• Rush Green (academy matches): 16:30 to 22:30
• Little Heath (academy matches): 09:00 to 15:00, mostly on weekends including Saturday and Sunday

Role overview

As a matchday steward, you will be one of the first people visitors meet and will help ensure smooth access, clear communication and safe crowd movement at the club’s venues.

Key responsibilities

• Welcome supporters and visitors in a professional manner
• Offer directions, helpful information and general guidance
• Act as an initial point of contact for customers
• Provide high-quality customer service throughout the shift
• Monitor crowd safety and security conditions
• Oversee entry and exit points
• Check tickets and accreditation
• Stop unauthorised access
• Handle conflict calmly and professionally
• Work cooperatively with colleagues and the wider team

• You must be 18 years old or above
• You should be reliable and punctual
• A friendly, approachable and professional manner is important
• Strong spoken communication skills are required
• You need to be available for evenings and weekends
• You should maintain a smart appearance
• A positive, proactive mindset is expected
• You should be open to learning and developing
• You must be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions

Safeguarding

The successful applicant must show commitment to the safety and welfare of children, young people and adults at risk. Background checks are required before employment begins and may include social media screening. The DBS level may be basic, standard or enhanced depending on the role. The person hired must also follow safeguarding procedures and report concerns or allegations of abuse, poor practice or anything affecting welfare within 24 hours, or sooner if directed by the club or foundation safeguarding team.
