Role overview
This position supports rail track maintenance and repair work in Canada Field, reporting to the Operations Manager. The role is paid hourly at $23.50 to $25 per hour.
Key duties
- Take part in team discussions such as unit meetings, job briefings, safety meetings, and process reviews.
- Remove worn track parts and install replacement components, including ties, rails, bars, and related hardware.
- Repair or replace track switches using the appropriate parts.
- Move tie plates into the correct position and align them properly.
- Drill rail holes for bolts, and tighten or loosen joint bolts that connect rail ends.
- Cut rails to the required lengths.
- Follow instructions, requests, orders, and job-related information.
- Lift, adjust, and roll rails into place.
- Sort track materials for loading and unloading.
- Build and repair street crossings and railroad crossings.
- Clear brush and vegetation from the right-of-way.
- Apply oil to switches, angle bars, and joints for lubrication.
- Install and remove rail anchors using hand tools.
- Drive spikes with a spike maul.
- Follow safe work practices to help prevent workplace injuries and accidents.
- Carry out snow removal work as needed.
Physical demands
- Ability to walk on uneven ground.
- Ability to climb in and out of different types of equipment.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Exposure to loud noise.
- Occasional stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, balancing, and climbing.
Working conditions
- Work in all weather conditions.
- Occasional exposure to equipment that increases heat levels.
- Use required protective gear, including a hard hat, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, gloves, and safety glasses.
- Wear a respirator when needed.
- Work hours may involve a non-standard workweek, overtime, and different shifts.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior outdoor work experience such as construction, heavy equipment operation, farming, or landscaping.
- Reliable transportation to and from job sites is required.
- Completion of annual training and successful passing of safety and track worker rules exams.
- Must pass all required assessments.
- Applicant must be at least 18 years old.
