Role overview
Apple’s Information Systems & Technology (IS&T) team supports the company’s internal operations, and the Knowledge and Training (K&T) group is focused on helping employees worldwide learn, work, and perform at their best through well-crafted training and knowledge resources. This position sits within Employee Experience and Productivity (EEP), the IS&T function responsible for collaboration tools, productivity services, user experience research and design, and the systems that power Apple’s original content studios.
As a Knowledge and Training Technical Writer, you will turn complex internal tools and systems into clear, practical documentation for Apple employees. The role blends technical communication, instructional design, and editing, and it plays an important part in improving how the global workforce uses internal technology.
What the role involves
You will work closely with product managers, engineers, project managers, UX/UI designers, editors, and leadership to identify documentation needs, define content goals, and ensure deliverables support product and business priorities. The work requires quickly learning new tools, converting technical detail into accessible content, and balancing multiple documentation efforts while maintaining high quality standards.
This is a collaborative writing role where feedback, iteration, and alignment across stakeholders are essential. Success in the position depends on your ability to keep content user-focused, adapt to shifting priorities, and contribute to documentation strategies that serve a diverse internal audience.
Key responsibilities
- Work with product, engineering, project, and design partners to understand features, workflows, and content needs.
- Evaluate input from multiple stakeholders and use sound editorial judgment to keep documentation focused on the end user.
- Help shape documentation strategy and produce a range of internal help materials, including setup instructions, user guides, how-to content, troubleshooting resources, FAQs, and navigation guidance.
- Create, revise, and publish content through the content management system.
- Handle documentation support requests, including error corrections, update needs, and missing-content issues.
- Combine information from several sources into clear, organized content plans.
- Convert complex technical topics into concise, engaging, and easy-to-understand language.
- Review content for correctness, clarity, grammar, punctuation, and style-guide compliance.
- Manage the full documentation process from planning and drafting through review, release, and ongoing updates.
- Improve content organization and information architecture to make material easier to find and use.
Minimum qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in Technical Communication, English, Journalism, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent hands-on experience.
- Professional experience as a technical writer, preferably in a technical setting involving internal tools, enterprise software, or developer-focused documentation.
- Proven ability to create user-facing documentation such as guides, tutorials, troubleshooting articles, or knowledge base content.
- A portfolio or writing samples showing recent technical documentation work.
- Experience using a content management system or documentation platform such as Drupal, Confluence, Markdown-based tools, or similar systems.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience working with Markdown, docs-as-code workflows, Git-based documentation processes, or static site generators.
- Working knowledge of information architecture and how users look for information.
- Familiarity with the Apple Style Guide and The Chicago Manual of Style.
- Comfort using Apple productivity applications such as Pages, Keynote, and Numbers.
- Experience managing work through project or ticketing tools such as Wrike, Asana, Jira, or HelpCentral.
- Working understanding of macOS and iOS, including Apple software troubleshooting.
- Interest in or experience with AI and GenAI tools for improving writing, documentation workflows, or training content.
- Experience creating content for global audiences with accessibility in mind.
- Strong motivation to help people get more value from technology and productivity tools.
- Advanced study, a specialized qualification in technical communication, or a technical writing certification would be an advantage.
