Role Summary

This position supports the Store Manager with the day-to-day running of thrift store operations to help ensure smooth service delivery across all store functions. When needed, the role also performs the duties of a Sales Associate.

Key Duties

• Provide courteous, positive service to customers and donors.
• Safeguard the condition and integrity of donated goods.
• Accurately process customer purchases, including cash and debit transactions.
• Help support store budget goals by maintaining strong service standards.
• Open and close the store in line with established procedures when assigned.
• Load, unload, sort, pack, price, and store donated materials.
• Use product knowledge to answer customer questions in person or by phone.
• Monitor store activity to help protect security and reduce risk.
• Handle merchandise carefully and support stock rotation.
• Help manage inventory through receiving, sorting, and pricing as instructed.
• Assist with store presentation, including window and merchandise displays, and keep the store tidy and appealing.
• Restock shelves, remove items from the sales floor when directed, and maintain organized merchandise flow.
• Follow sorting and processing standards for donated items.
• Keep the store clean by sweeping, dusting, mopping, and tidying as needed.
• Follow store policies and procedures at all times.
• Support cycle counts and inventory reconciliation activities.
• Deliver excellent service to guests and donors.
• Serve as acting Team Lead/Working Supervisor for Store Associates when the Store Manager is absent.
• Provide operational guidance and on-the-job coaching when required.
• Maintain a safe workplace by following health and safety requirements.
• Carry out other related tasks as assigned.

Working Relationships

Internal contacts include NRO Administration, TS management, and staff. External contacts include donors, clients, and contractors.

Reporting Structure

This role reports to the Store Manager and does not have direct reports.

Working Conditions

This is a permanent, full-time position in a normal retail store setting. The work involves regular physical activity, including stretching, bending, twisting, pushing, standing, walking, and lifting up to 30 pounds without assistance. The role also involves frequent exposure to dust, fumes, and changing temperatures, as well as regular deadlines, repeated tasks, and interactions that may involve conflict with guests, donors, vendors, and employees.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications

Candidates should be willing to understand and support The Salvation Army in Canada’s mission and purpose as it relates to the role. They must also be able to work in compliance with the OH&S Act and Regulations and follow the organization’s health and safety policies and procedures. A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Completion of some high school is required. Applicants should also have two years of experience in a store or warehouse environment.

Skills and Capabilities

The successful candidate should bring strong interpersonal and communication abilities, a team-oriented approach, keen attention to detail, and the physical capability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds frequently, including pushing, pulling, bending, and twisting product.

Applicants must be able to successfully complete any applicable screening and background checks to the organization’s satisfaction.

Compensation

The expected hiring range for this position is $19.19 to $24.00, with a maximum rate of $28.79. Final placement within the range will depend on market conditions, internal equity, and the candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and qualifications.
