Role overview

WorkSafeBC is seeking a Payroll Assistant to support full-cycle payroll administration for a workforce of 4,300 employees. This role suits a self-directed, detail-focused professional with a strong service mindset and hands-on payroll experience in a mid-sized, complex environment.

The position contributes to safeguarding the financial integrity of British Columbia’s workers’ compensation system and supports services that affect workers, employers, and the broader community.

Work arrangement

This role follows a hybrid model, combining remote work with in-office attendance based on operational requirements.

Key duties

  • Handle payroll-related transactions with care, including new hires, terminations, leaves, promotions, salary adjustments, and similar employee changes.
  • Check and confirm that all salary and benefit inputs are complete and accurate before processing.
  • Ensure payroll actions comply with current collective agreements and applicable payroll legislation.
  • Communicate with employees and outside parties such as benefit providers, insurance organizations, Employment Insurance, external auditors, and the Canada Revenue Agency.
  • Reconcile the monthly superannuation report for eligible staff, prepare supporting statistics and forms, and send them to BC Pension Corporation.
  • Pull payroll information into spreadsheets, format reports to requested specifications, and provide data to different departments.
  • Demonstrate workplace behaviours aligned with the organization’s values: responsiveness, respect, fairness, collaboration, accountability, and forward thinking.

What the team is looking for

  • Ability to organize and prioritize a demanding, detail-heavy workload while meeting deadlines and maintaining accuracy.
  • Strong listening skills and the ability to explain information clearly to people with different levels of knowledge.
  • Confident, polite communication with both internal stakeholders and external contacts.
  • Sound judgment in reviewing information, identifying issues, and finding timely solutions.
  • Professional customer service approach with tact and diplomacy, especially when handling concerns or complaints.

Experience and qualifications

  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification.
  • At least one year of full-cycle payroll processing experience in a large, complex payroll environment.
  • Grade 12, along with relevant coursework from the National Payroll Institute or other post-secondary studies, may also be considered.
  • Experience in a unionized workplace and familiarity with PeopleSoft are considered advantages.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be reviewed.

Important conditions

  • Before any offer can be finalized, the successful candidate must satisfy the Criminal Records Review Act requirements for working with children and/or vulnerable adults.
