Role Overview
This is a full-time, on-site position in Wayanad for a Livestock Inspector. The role centers on checking the health, cleanliness, and living conditions of cattle and other dairy animals, while also supporting herd management and milk quality efforts.
What You’ll Do
- Carry out regular inspections of livestock to evaluate health, hygiene, and overall welfare.
- Track feed, nutrition, and living conditions to help maintain productive and healthy animals.
- Spot early signs of illness, discomfort, or abnormal behavior and escalate concerns quickly.
- Ensure farm practices align with veterinary guidance and applicable animal health rules.
- Maintain detailed inspection notes, health logs, and related records with accuracy.
- Guide farmers and farm staff on better breeding, herd care, and livestock management practices.
- Support milk quality checks at farms and collection points as part of quality assurance.
- Work closely with veterinary professionals, quality teams, and farm personnel to resolve issues and improve herd performance.
Additional Responsibilities
- Conduct physical health reviews of dairy cattle, including general fitness, milk output indicators, and udder condition.
- Identify cattle in heat, manage preserved semen inventory, and carry out bovine artificial insemination procedures accurately.
- Oversee sanitation in milking areas, strengthen biosecurity practices, and isolate animals showing mastitis or contagious disease symptoms.
- Administer vaccines, reproductive hormones, and preventive treatments under the supervision of the consulting veterinarian.
- Inspect barns, milking parlors, calf pens, ventilation, feeding systems, and water access points for safety and function.
- Prepare inspection reports, keep dairy herd improvement records, monitor cattle movement permits, and handle milk sample processing.
- Coordinate with veterinary authorities, dairy cooperatives, and internal management to support high operational standards.
Qualifications and Skills
The ideal candidate should understand livestock health, dairy cattle management, and basic veterinary care. The role calls for the ability to recognize common animal diseases, assess welfare, and apply preventive measures. Experience with farm inspections, documentation, and compliance with local agricultural and animal health requirements is important. Strong communication skills are needed for working with farmers, veterinary personnel, and internal teams. The job also requires independent on-site work, travel across farms, and the ability to manage inspection schedules. Basic data entry and reporting skills are expected. A diploma or degree in Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Science, Agriculture, or a related field is preferred. Experience in dairy or livestock inspection is an added advantage, and familiarity with regional farming practices will be helpful.
