The Design team at Backpack is instrumental in achieving our goal of creating the most reliable and user-friendly crypto products. We tackle complex user experience challenges and transform intricate technical problems into intuitive products. As a Lead Product Designer focusing on Design Systems, you will be responsible for the core foundation of our product – a scalable, token-driven system ensuring consistency, accessibility, and seamless integration with modern AI-assisted design and development workflows. You will collaborate closely with Product Design, Engineering, and Product Management to deliver a world-class product experience at scale.

What You'll Be Doing

• End-to-end ownership of our design system, including tokens, primitives, components, patterns, and documentation.
• Establishing a token architecture (color, typography, spacing, elevation, motion) that scales effectively across different themes and platforms.
• Collaborating daily with the engineering team to implement the system in code, ensuring high fidelity between Figma and code.
• Promoting and educating product teams on best practices for designing and building with the system.
• Defining standards and governance to maintain system coherence as contributions grow from designers and engineers.
• Structuring the system for AI readiness, ensuring it is semantic, well-documented, and compatible with emerging design and front-end tools.

What We Look For

• A minimum of 7 years of experience in product design, design engineering, or a related field, with substantial experience in design systems.
• A strong passion for integrating design, code, and systems thinking.
• Proven experience in building or significantly scaling a design system within a product company (examples are required).
• In-depth expertise in design tokens, theming, and component architecture using Figma.
• A solid understanding of how design systems translate into production front-end code, with a history of close collaboration with engineers.
• Proficiency in accessibility standards (WCAG) and a keen eye for details that build user trust.

Nice to Haves

• Experience in fintech, crypto, trading, or other sectors involving data-intensive, regulated products.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted design tools or front-end development technologies.
