직무 설명

Role overview

Chesterfield Fire and EMS is hiring an experienced human resources professional to join a busy and evolving HR function that supports a modern public safety organization. This role works with a workforce of more than 600 sworn and civilian employees, along with over 150 volunteers, and requires someone who can thrive in a fast-moving environment while partnering closely with a large, service-oriented department.

The position focuses on employee relations, employment support, policy coordination, recruitment and hiring assistance, retirement processing, and broader administrative HR support. Team members in the HR division are cross-trained so they can deliver strong support across multiple HR areas and help serve both current and future employees effectively.

Key responsibilities

  • Help deliver and support important human resources programs, processes, and department functions.
  • Offer direction and information related to hiring and retirement workflows.
  • Support department leaders with a range of HR matters and employee-related issues.
  • Collect, study, organize, and summarize data for reports, projects, and decision-making, then provide recommendations.
  • Interpret and apply HR policies, procedures, laws, and regulations, and assist with policy updates and revisions when needed.
  • Create training materials on specialized HR topics and provide staff training when required.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications

Applicants should have a solid understanding of human resources administration principles and practices, along with knowledge of relevant federal and state laws and regulations. The role calls for someone who can evaluate complex situations, consider options, make practical recommendations, and use independent judgment within established rules.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable handling sensitive and confidential personnel matters with professionalism, tact, and diplomacy. Strong verbal and written communication skills are required, as well as the ability to explain HR rules and procedures clearly to others. Candidates should also be able to use a personal computer, standard office software, and related equipment, and build effective working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.

Education and experience

A bachelor's degree in human resources, organizational management, business administration, public administration, or a related discipline is required, along with at least 2 years of professional human resources experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may also be accepted. Professional certification such as PHR, SHRM-CP, CEBS, or another relevant certification in the assigned area is preferred.

Additional requirements

  • Pre-employment drug screening is mandatory.
  • A criminal background check through the FBI is required.
  • Education and degree verification will be completed before employment.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Because the fire and EMS department operates 24/7/365, HR staff may be recalled during severe weather or natural disasters.
  • The role is part of an approved Career Development Plan and may include career progression opportunities and salary incentives, depending on funding, performance, qualifications, and experience.
