Role overview
This freelance part-time remote role is for a Bot Developer supporting a Tendem project in a hybrid AI-plus-human workflow. The work focuses on creating and improving conversational bots and messaging-platform integrations for WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, and related channels. You will contribute bot engineering expertise, conversation-flow judgment, and quality checks so the bots are stable, practical, and ready for end users.

What the work involves
As part of the Tendem project, you will design, develop, and improve messaging bots used in scenarios such as customer support, appointment scheduling, order capture, content delivery, moderation, and automated alerts.
Core duties
- Create bots for WhatsApp Business API, WhatsApp Cloud API, Telegram Bot API, Discord API, and similar messaging channels.
- Plan and implement conversational journeys, dialogue states, and fallback logic.
- Connect bots with language models such as OpenAI or Anthropic when natural language responses are needed.
- Link bots with backend systems, databases, CRMs, and external APIs such as booking, payment, and content services.
- Work with webhooks, platform limits, and channel-specific message formats including interactive messages, buttons, media, and templates.
- Review AI-generated bot code, correct it, and improve it for accuracy, stability, and clean error handling.
- Add logging, monitoring, and recovery mechanisms so production bots remain dependable.
Experience and technical background
The ideal candidate has practical experience in backend development, integrations, automation, or bot building, along with a solid understanding of messaging-platform workflows. You should be comfortable building production-ready conversational systems, working with APIs and webhooks, and turning AI-assisted output into reliable user experiences.
Technical requirements
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in backend, integration, automation, or bot development work.
- At least 1 year of hands-on experience creating bots for major messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack, or similar.
- Strong working knowledge of Python or Node.js for backend bot logic.
- Good command of REST APIs, webhooks, OAuth, and asynchronous request handling.
- Experience using relational or NoSQL databases to store conversation state and user information.
- Exposure to LLM APIs such as OpenAI or Anthropic, plus prompt design for conversational use cases, is an advantage.
- Understanding of platform constraints, message templates, and approval processes such as WhatsApp template messaging.
- Experience with deployment and hosting tools such as Docker, serverless setups, VPS, or PaaS platforms.
Additional requirements
- High attention to detail and a strong focus on bot reliability, with no tolerance for silent failures or broken flows.
- Ability to work independently and deliver complete bots with minimal supervision.
- A portfolio or examples of bots you have built are required.
- Upper-intermediate English level (B2) or higher is required.
Time commitment and compensation
The estimated workload is around 10 to 20 hours per week during active phases, depending on project needs. This is an estimate rather than a guaranteed schedule and applies only while the project is active. Contributors can earn up to the equivalent of USD 60 per hour, with pay varying by contribution level and speed. Other projects may have different compensation levels based on scope and expertise.
