Role Overview
SAFEbuilt is hiring an experienced Combination Building Inspector for its Tyrone, Georgia location. The role sits within a nationwide team of community development professionals known for integrity, continuous improvement, service, teamwork, and respect. This position is suited to a motivated self-starter who enjoys varied work, independent decision-making, and the support of a well-established team.
The inspector will work across residential, commercial, and public facility projects, helping ensure that construction work aligns with applicable codes and standards while maintaining clear documentation and professional communication with a wide range of stakeholders.
Key Duties
- Carry out daily on-site inspections for residential, commercial, and public facility construction work.
- Speak with members of the public and translate technical information for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Examine residential and commercial plans, along with engineering calculations for building components, to verify code compliance.
- Offer guidance and recommendations on the interpretation of City, State, Federal, and construction standards, including local ordinances.
- Keep detailed and accurate inspection records, including test outcomes and other relevant notes.
- Maintain computer-based inspection logs and enter findings into permitting software.
- Handle additional job-related responsibilities as needed.
Required Background
- Strong working knowledge of local building codes and modern construction methods and technologies.
- At least 3 years of experience interpreting codes in the field and delivering compliant solutions.
- Ability to work constructively with staff members, the public, contractors, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Excellent spoken and written communication skills.
- Strong organization, time management, and attention to detail.
- Ability to take initiative and use sound independent judgment.
- Comfort working on multiple projects in a fast-moving environment.
- Up-to-date familiarity with different editions of the International Building Codes.
- Solid computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office.
- ICC Inspector certifications in multiple trades are required.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Physical and Work Conditions
This role requires regular movement in the field, including walking, standing, climbing, bending, stooping, crawling, and kneeling. The inspector must be able to use ladders, scaffolding, and unfinished stairways to access roofs, attics, crawl spaces, and other elevated or confined spaces. Occasional lifting or moving of items weighing about 25 to 50 pounds may be required.
The work also demands clear vision for reading plans and identifying construction details, plus sufficient hearing to communicate in noisy environments and notice safety issues through visual and auditory checks. Manual dexterity is needed to use tools, inspection equipment, and computers or tablets for reporting.
Work takes place both in an office and in the field, with exposure to weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, and snow, as well as construction-site hazards like noise, dust, and uneven ground. Frequent driving between inspection sites and company locations within the region is part of the job.
