Role overview
Thermo Fisher Scientific is hiring a Field Applications Scientist to deliver technical expertise, practical training, and customer support for its analytical and scientific technologies. The position plays a key role in helping customers improve workflows, get the most from their instruments, and advance research outcomes while supporting the company’s mission to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer.
What you will do
You will work closely with sales teams and customers to provide product demonstrations, pre-sales and post-sales support, applications guidance, and technical training. The role also involves advising customers on best practices, helping solve complex technical issues, and developing new applications across multiple technology platforms.
In addition, you will partner with marketing, R&D, product management, and other internal teams to support customer success, strengthen relationships, and contribute to business growth through technical excellence.
Work schedule and environment
The role follows a standard Monday to Friday schedule. Work will be split between laboratory and office settings, and may require personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, gloves, gowns, lab coats, and ear plugs.
Requirements
- An advanced degree with at least 3 years of relevant experience, or a bachelor’s degree with at least 5 years of relevant experience in analytical instrumentation and applications.
- Preferred study areas include Chemistry, Biochemistry, Materials Science, Molecular Biology, or a closely related field.
- Strong hands-on experience with technical problem solving and method development.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain complex ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Confidence in presenting, training, and demonstrating products.
- Ability to work effectively on your own and as part of a team in a goal-driven environment.
- Project management ability and comfort handling several priorities at once.
- Willingness to travel up to about 50% across New Zealand and other regions when required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant scientific software tools.
- Strong customer orientation and interpersonal skills.
- Capability to build productive relationships with both internal stakeholders and external customers.
- Valid driver’s licence and passport for travel.
- Ability to operate in both direct and matrix organisational structures.
- Willingness to learn quickly and take on new challenges.
