Role Overview
The Youth Development Professional supports an afterschool program by planning, running, supervising, and assessing activities within one assigned area, which may include academics, social recreation, arts and crafts, or physical fitness.
Core Duties
- Help prepare young people for success by creating a setting that supports positive youth outcomes.
- Encourage participation and keep members engaged in club activities.
- Register new members and support the club orientation process while modeling appropriate behavior and guidance.
- Run programs and activities in a professional way that reflects Boys & Girls Club values and philosophy.
- Provide consistent support to youth and their families.
- Deliver programs, services, and activities effectively for drop-in members and visitors.
- Track, review, and improve programs to maintain safety, program quality, and branch appearance.
- Prepare regular activity reports.
- Plan and lead daily and weekly youth activities, with advance weekly schedules and rotation plans that use a variety of learning-focused activities.
- Contribute to the creation and rollout of fresh, engaging, and educational youth activities.
- Assist with quarterly activities, special events, parent nights, and similar initiatives.
- Support the coordination of BGCA national programs such as Youth of the Month, Youth of the Year, S.M.A.R.T. Moves, and incentive programs.
- Build communication between members, parents, teachers, school staff, police, community leaders, and supervisors.
- Participate in weekly branch staff meetings to help maintain a productive team environment.
- Help enforce safety procedures related to participant wellbeing, risk management, and building security.
- Assist in keeping the club clean, maintained, and presentable.
- Address minor youth conflicts as they arise during programs.
- Take part in special programs or events when needed.
- Drive the club van if required.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Working Relationships
Internal: Works closely every day with club staff, volunteers, members, and the supervisor to share information, discuss concerns, explain procedures, and provide direction or counseling.
External: Communicates with community groups, schools, parents, and other outside contacts to help solve issues.
Schedule
The role follows a Monday through Friday schedule from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
Requirements
- Minimum education of a high school diploma or GED.
- Prior experience working with children.
- Working knowledge of youth development.
- Ability to motivate young people and manage behavioral challenges.
- Comfort interacting with the general public.
- Capability to plan and deliver high-quality youth programs.
- Ability to organize and supervise members in a safe environment.
- CPR and First Aid certification is mandatory, though it can be obtained through the club.
- A valid state driver’s license is recommended.
Physical Environment
The position involves supervising large groups of children and coordinating their activities. Most of the workday is spent standing, and moderate lifting is occasionally required.
