Senior Software Engineer - Backend / Python (m/f/x)

Role overview

Cara Care is a digital health company supported by Bayer AG, focused on improving digestive health through technology. As the team grows its product line and upgrades the platform, it is looking for a senior backend engineer who is practical, adaptable, and ready to help build the next generation of digital therapeutics immediately.

You would join a cross-functional product squad with strong ownership, lightweight processes, and a clear patient-first mission. The role suits someone who enjoys solving real problems with code, is comfortable working across technologies, and understands when speed matters and when robustness matters more.

Key mission

• Build, maintain, and run scalable software services across the stack, from backend APIs to patient-facing mobile and web experiences.
• Work closely with Product, Design, and Medical teams to shape, define, and ship new features while improving the existing platform.
• Strengthen architecture, code standards, and security practices, especially in a regulated healthcare setting governed by ISO 62304, TR-03161, and MDR.
• Help power a platform that supports several regulated digital health products, including IBS and GERD, with more areas planned for expansion.
• Support and mentor other engineers, contributing to a higher technical standard across the team.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong focus on backend work.
• Deep hands-on backend development experience in one or more established modern languages such as Python, Go, Node.js, Java, or PHP; the current stack uses Python, Django, and PostgreSQL.
• Strong grasp of distributed systems and service-oriented architecture.
• Solid knowledge of containers, Kubernetes, and the broader cloud-native ecosystem.
• Experience with Google Cloud Platform or another major cloud provider such as AWS or Azure.
• Very good Linux administration skills, including managing and securing bare Linux cloud servers.
• Basic knowledge of monitoring and observability tools; experience with Prometheus, Loki, and Grafana is a major advantage.
• Strong understanding of relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
• A curious, pragmatic mindset with a motivation to continuously improve both the product and the platform.
• Bonus points for basic networking knowledge, GitOps experience with ArgoCD or FluxCD, familiarity with Ansible or similar tooling, product-team collaboration experience, and background in regulated, healthcare, or security-focused environments.
