Role overview
SMC is looking for a technically strong Sales and Application Engineer to support business growth across New Zealand. Based in Auckland and reporting to the Head of Sales - NZ, this role sits at the intersection of engineering, sales, and customer support. You will work with customers, internal teams, and integration partners to assess application needs, recommend suitable pneumatics and automation solutions, and help ensure successful delivery.
This is a customer-facing position that requires strong product knowledge and the ability to train others effectively. A major part of the job is to improve application support for customers while also coaching and enabling the sales team through technical guidance, product demonstrations, and structured training.

- Higher market penetration and stronger commercial performance.
- Sales, engineering, and learning and development working together through deep product expertise, training support, and customer-focused solutions.
- Achievement of targets through active selling of SMC's full product range, disciplined pipeline oversight, and effective teamwork.
Key responsibilities
You will be expected to promote SMC's products and solutions to both new and current customers, provide technical advice during the selling process, and match customer needs with the right application approach. The role also includes product demonstrations, technical training, and support for complex opportunities alongside the commercial team. In addition, you will help build technical capability within the sales team and work with product management to execute portfolio plans.

Requirements
- A trade qualification and/or an engineering degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Mechatronics is required.
- At least 5 years of experience in technical sales, preferably in automation or pneumatics.
- Strong knowledge of industrial automation, pneumatics, and control systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, along with strong people skills.
- Comfort using CRM systems and Microsoft Office tools.
- A current driver's licence and willingness to travel.
