Role overview

The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley is seeking a motivated Ranger to join the team in Kununurra. This maximum-term full-time role focuses on supporting community safety, protecting local assets and natural areas, and ensuring statutory and local law compliance across the Shire.

Key duties

In this position, you will help ensure compliance with relevant laws and Shire local laws while delivering a high standard of service to residents and visitors. The work includes enforcement, inspections, animal management and fire-related duties.

• Apply legislation and local laws consistently and fairly, including requirements under the Dog Act 1976, Cat Act 2011, Control of Off-Road Vehicles Act 1978, Litter Act 1979, Caravan and Camping Grounds Act 1995, Bush Fire Act 1994, the Local Government Act and Shire local laws.
• Carry out firebreak and property inspections to confirm compliance with bushfire obligations.
• Perform bushfire control and weather officer duties in line with the Bush Fires Act 1954.
• Assist with fire control activities, including controlled burning and fire extinguishment.
• Manage abandoned vehicle matters in accordance with the applicable legislation.
• Oversee the animal management facility, including cleaning, register upkeep, animal release or rehoming, humane euthanasia where required, and fee collection.
• Remove and relocate snakes within municipal boundaries.

Required background and capabilities

The Shire is looking for someone with regulatory and compliance capability, plus the practical and interpersonal skills needed for field-based public-facing work.

• Regulatory compliance experience or capability.
• Current Provide First Aid certification.
• Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Basic Emergency Life Support qualifications.
• Unrestricted current Western Australia C-class driver licence.
• Reptile handling and capture experience, supported by a certificate.
• Firearms handling and safety certificate and practical experience.
• Strong organisation and time management skills.
• Sound computer literacy.
• Excellent communication, negotiation and mediation skills.

Employment conditions

This is a maximum-term full-time position based in Kununurra, remote Western Australia. The closing time for applications is 6:00 PM AWST on 17/08/2026.

Eligibility and recruitment requirements

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Australia and will need to provide proof of that entitlement, such as an Australian or New Zealand passport, birth certificate, or a foreign passport with the appropriate visa. A National Police Clearance is also required before the interview stage.
