Project Engineer - Ontario

Role Summary

The Project Engineer will oversee the administrative and technical delivery of a construction project while coordinating a team of field and cost engineers. This position serves as a key link between the construction manager and the project team, especially for cost, revenue, and cash flow reporting. It also includes mentoring and developing junior staff.

The Eastern Canada District handles work across highways, bridges, mass transit, mine site development and open-pit operations, hydroelectric powerhouses, wind energy facilities, dams, and industrial projects. Its work supports the construction and mining sectors across Eastern Canada.

Work Location and Mobility

This organization follows a flexible workforce model and may relocate teams based on available work, employee development plans, skill sets, and career goals. The role is based in Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada, and may require travel or relocation depending on business needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Build a thorough understanding of contract drawings and specifications.
• Review site conditions, spot discrepancies, identify cost-saving opportunities, and carry out corrective actions when needed.
• Check the work of subordinate staff against contract requirements and address deficiencies with corrective follow-up.
• Apply guidance from supervisors and coworkers to define and carry out safe, efficient work methods.
• Monitor equipment and installed systems for safe operation, possible hazards, and any need for adjustment, movement, or replacement.
• Recognize safety risks and act quickly to reduce or remove them.
• Respond appropriately to site warning signals, alarms, tags, and other hazard indicators.
• Follow lockout/tagout procedures correctly and safely.
• Develop and maintain the master project schedule using scheduling tools and input from project management staff.
• Handle document control by receiving, logging, and tracking new drawings and contract documents.
• Assess revised drawings and documents for changed conditions, measure the effect of those changes, and share updates with the supervisor and field teams.
• Prepare monthly cost forecasts and quarterly cash flow projections using project management data.
• Procure materials, expedite deliveries, and oversee materials control activities.
• Support the site manager in executing the project quality assurance and quality control program.
• Recommend improvements in methods, staffing, and procedures to strengthen project performance.
• Lead multiple projects as the coordinating project engineer while supervising and training junior engineers.
• Communicate clearly in both spoken and written form and perform basic arithmetic quickly and accurately.
• Read and interpret plans and specifications and convert 2D drawings into a three-dimensional understanding.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in a construction-related discipline, or equivalent education and experience in project or field engineering.
• Must hold a P.Eng. license, be registered as an Engineer-in-Training, or be eligible to register.
• At least 5 years of construction experience, with strong emphasis on safety.
• Working knowledge of systems such as accounts payable/accounts receivable, materials control, estimating, job cost updates, and subcontracts.
• Demonstrated strength in leadership, people management, communication, planning, organization, delegation, teaching, and mentoring.
• Ability to relocate and travel as required by business needs.
• Capability to set high standards for leadership, safety, quality, and productivity.
• Ability to access all areas of an active construction site.

• Be prepared to work across different locations and under changing site conditions.
• The openings include both backfilling existing roles and creating new positions.

Compensation and Benefits

The base pay range for this role is CAD 97,142 to CAD 130,000 per year. Actual compensation may vary based on education, experience, skill set, and location.
