Port Captain

Role overview

The Port Captain will be responsible for overseeing vessel readiness, crew coordination, operational standards, and onboard welfare across assigned ships. This role requires close collaboration with captains, crew members, office teams, purchasing, personnel, operations, and engineering stakeholders to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant marine operations.

Core responsibilities

• Manage vessel budget control for food supplies and housekeeping consumables, keeping spending aligned with approved limits.
• Maintain effective day-to-day communication between vessel teams and office personnel to support safety, wellbeing, and smooth operations for seafaring staff and company property.
• Interview deck officer candidates in detail and choose appropriate crew members for assigned vessels.
• Prepare Masters, officers, and crew before deployment so they clearly understand their duties, onboard expectations, and company standards.
• Coordinate with the Personnel Department and Vessel Master on travel arrangements, crew rotations, and related personnel matters, while tracking crew overlap days.
• Ensure requisitions are submitted on schedule and review deck and catering requests to support economical and efficient inventory management.
• Work with Purchasing to secure timely supply deliveries, monitor requisition progress, and escalate any issues that could affect operations; also confirm that adequate spare parts are available.
• Track bridge team performance closely and complete regular appraisals for captains.
• Identify strong performers and underperformers and escalate them to the Fleet Superintendent so competence and performance matters can be handled under company procedures.
• Make sure all joining staff receive proper handover and familiarization when boarding.
• Support ongoing crew welfare and general wellbeing across the fleet.
• Carry out monthly onboard inspections for each vessel, including checks of the hull, cargo areas, deck machinery, safety equipment, and related systems.
• Be present onboard when special offshore operational requirements arise.
• Coordinate with the Operations Department and Vessel Master on certification, safety equipment, and loose lifting gear matters.
• Prepare vessel repair specifications in coordination with the Engineering Superintendent or Port Engineer.
• Ensure IMCA guidance and recognized industry best practices are followed at all times for vessel DP operations, equipment, and personnel requirements.
• Confirm that fleet DP systems and navigational equipment remain fully operational and ready for use.
