Role overview
Sagicor Group Jamaica Limited is hiring a Paralegal to join its Group Legal team in Kingston. This position supports the Legal Department in providing legal services to the company, its subsidiaries, and both internal and external stakeholders.
The role covers a wide mix of legal and administrative work, including conveyancing and mortgage matters, probate support, lease preparation, review of standard commercial contracts and corporate records, and assistance with data privacy compliance activities.
Key duties
- Help prepare mortgage loan securitization materials and associated security documents while coordinating with clients, external counsel, lenders, mortgage officers, and the disbursements team.
- Manage the mortgage arrears portfolio and assist with property sales under Power of Sale as well as foreclosure matters.
- Draft lease agreements using instructions from Sagicor Bank or Sagicor Property Services Limited.
- Support the Legal Department with customer-death enquiries, legal and regulatory research, drafting documents and correspondence, coordinating with counterparties and their attorneys, and handling mortgage discharges and title forwarding for Sagicor entities.
- Assist with data privacy compliance work, including reviewing and negotiating Data Processing Agreements and Data Sharing Agreements to support compliance with the Jamaica Data Protection Act.
- Support the handling of Data Subject Access Requests, review documents for legal professional privilege, prepare files for attorney review, and assist with data breach response procedures.
- Prepare, review, and update standard commercial contracts, Non-Disclosure Agreements, vendor agreements, and internal company policies.
- Check vendor templates against internal policy standards, flag and escalate non-standard clauses, and help harmonize boilerplate language.
- Present titles to the Master in Chambers for matters involving the modification of restrictive covenants.
- Carry out any other related duties assigned from time to time.
Requirements
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Paralegal Studies, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized tertiary institution.
- Three to five years of experience working as a paralegal or legal assistant, ideally in an in-house legal team or a respected law firm.
- Strong working knowledge of common computer applications, including word processing and spreadsheet software.
- Good understanding of conveyancing law, practice, and procedure.
- Good knowledge of succession law, probate practice, and procedure.
- Good understanding of company registration and maintenance procedures.
- Strong legal research and analytical ability.
- Well-developed time management and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
