Role Summary
The Undergraduate Math Specialist supports students in the Developmental Education program within the Undergraduate College, with a focus on required General Education courses. This position combines tutoring, academic coaching, case management, and close coordination with instructors.
This is a part-time onsite role of about 16 to 20 hours per week, with most scheduled hours taking place during daytime classes, generally between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one and small-group math support through tutoring and academic coaching.
- Use informal assessment, feedback, modeling, and guided practice to strengthen student understanding.
- Create personalized support plans that build on student strengths and encourage independent learning.
- Apply responsive teaching approaches and help students develop metacognitive learning strategies.
- Develop trusting, authentic relationships with students based on emotional intelligence, accountability, and awareness.
- Help students feel confident advocating for the support they need to succeed academically.
- Track student progress using performance indicators and engagement patterns to spot those who may need early intervention.
- Maintain accurate, timely case notes documenting support provided and outcomes over time.
- Make referrals and share information in a thoughtful, ethical manner while following all protocols and policies.
- Reply to student support requests promptly and effectively.
- Work collaboratively with instructors using a cooperative, aligned approach focused on shared student success.
- Meet regularly with classroom instructors to discuss student progress and support adjustments.
- Participate in team meetings to review curriculum, reflect on practices and data, and plan student support strategies.
- Coordinate with partners and other teams to connect students with resources and improve program and university support.
- Take part in professional development and training.
Qualifications

Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Math, Math Education, or a related field.
- Experience tutoring or teaching mathematics at the high school or college level, including areas such as quantitative reasoning, financial math, statistics, algebra, or geometry.
- Experience using digital tools in an educational setting.
- Experience working on a team toward shared goals.
- Preferred: experience tutoring or teaching students from diverse backgrounds and with a range of abilities.
- Preferred: experience supporting multilingual or multidialectal students.
- Preferred: experience working in a classroom or tutoring center.
- Preferred: bilingual or multilingual ability.

Compensation and Benefits
Part-time staff may be eligible for benefits including health insurance, retirement benefits, and paid time off.
The pay range for this position is $21.88 to $30.64 per hour. Compensation will depend on the specific role and candidate background, including budget, job-related knowledge and skills, experience, market factors, tenure and standing with the university for current employees, and internal equity.
