Position overview

School District No. 73 (Kamloops-Thompson) is hiring a Groundsperson for its Kamloops, British Columbia location. This is a permanent full-time role that runs for 8 months each year, with the layoff period falling between November and March.

Employment terms and benefits

Role summary

Reporting to the Manager of Grounds and working with limited supervision, the Groundsperson handles routine upkeep of school playgrounds and athletic fields. The work includes operating grass-cutting and other powered equipment, exercising independent judgment, and offering direction and guidance to labourers when needed.

Key duties

• Carry out a range of grounds maintenance tasks, including the safe use and upkeep of mowing and power equipment.
• Complete minor repairs on equipment when required.
• Support the care of flowers, trees, and turf, and assist with sprinkler installation and fence repairs.
• Perform physically demanding tasks on a regular basis.
• Handle other related assignments as they arise.
• May be required to step into Equipment Operator duties.

Skills, knowledge, and abilities

• Comfortable communicating and working effectively with the public, students, teachers, administrators, and other district staff.
• Capable of completing related tasks with minimal direct supervision.
• Able to guide labourers on the proper use and servicing of hand-operated grounds equipment and related work.
• Can operate grass-cutting and other powered equipment.
• Familiar with hand tools and equipment used to maintain playgrounds, fields, walkways, parking areas, and grassy spaces.
• Open to training in fall protection and other assignment-related safety topics.
• Knowledge of snow clearing methods.
• Understanding of mowing practices, fertilizing approaches, and shrub care and maintenance.
• Willing or able to train on safe operation of equipment such as a Bobcat, mower, man lift, plow truck, chain saw, and forklift.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 is preferred.
• At least one season of proven experience in a related labourer role.
• Must be physically capable of carrying out all duties associated with the job.
• Transportation of Dangerous Goods certificate required.
• Valid British Columbia Class 5 driver’s licence with Code 20 heavy trailer endorsement required.
