Role summary
Under general supervision, the selected employee will carry out semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work of moderate complexity across a range of building systems and surfaces. The work includes both repairs and routine upkeep, along with related tasks as needed. The position involves hands-on work in areas such as painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, masonry, and general mechanical repair. It sits above Building Maintenance Worker 1, which is more closely supervised and more limited in scope, and below Building Maintenance Worker 3, which is a lead role.
Qualifications
Candidates should have experience equivalent to three years of full-time progressively more skilled labor and trade work, including at least two years specifically in building maintenance.
Special requirements
Applicants must hold a valid driver’s license.
For positions in the Division of Rehabilitation Services of the Department of Human Services, selected candidates will also need to complete a criminal history disclosure form, authorize release of criminal history records to the appointing authority, provide fingerprints for a TBI-based criminal history records check, and undergo a review against the Department of Health’s vulnerable persons registry.
What the job involves
The work covers identifying maintenance problems, deciding whether to fix them directly or escalate them, and carrying out repairs by using drawings, diagrams, or maintenance manuals as references. The role also involves operating and maintaining a range of hand tools, power tools, and other equipment, as well as providing direction to others when needed.
Daily duties include checking electrical systems, basic plumbing, mechanical systems such as HVAC, laundry, and food service equipment, and replacing worn or faulty components. The position also includes routine repair of standard equipment, rewiring outlets and breaker boxes, fixing windows, doors, flooring, woodwork, drywall, and similar building components, plus performing basic carpentry, minor HVAC repair, minor construction, plumbing, landscaping, janitorial work, and basic welding.
In addition, the role requires reviewing preventive maintenance plans, completing routine maintenance to keep systems operating efficiently, and conducting daily walk-through inspections to ensure buildings remain in good condition. The employee will also communicate with vendors and customers, provide basic service support, and direct people to the right resource or answer.
The job may also involve giving expert guidance to members and agency SLB coordinators about payment and application procedures, offering input on workflow improvements, and helping maintain related files and sub-processes. State-issued vehicles such as a pickup truck, golf cart, watercraft, or other equipment may be operated as part of the role.
