Founded in 1744, Sotheby’s connects people with remarkable art and luxury items through auctions, private sales, and retail. Its work spans 70 selling categories and is powered by a strong technology platform and a worldwide specialist network across 40 countries. The business includes categories such as Contemporary Art, Modern and Impressionist Art, Old Masters, Chinese Works of Art, Jewelry, Watches, Wine and Spirits, Design, plus collectible cars and real estate through RM Sotheby’s and Concierge. Sotheby’s Financial Services also serves as a major art-lending business, providing capital solutions to collectors globally and having arranged more than $12 billion in loans since launch.
The company’s new global headquarters is located in the Breuer building at 945 Madison Avenue in New York City.
The Role
Sotheby’s is seeking a seasoned product executive to own the front-end digital experiences that generate demand across Sothebys.com and the mobile app. The scope covers all Sotheby’s websites and business models, including auctions, private sales, and marketplace offerings.
This leader will shape and deliver the long-range product vision, roadmap, and execution during an important period of business transformation. The role partners closely with product managers on scope and planning, design teams on user experience, engineering leadership on resourcing, and business stakeholders to deliver the roadmap and support broader product change. Collaboration with other product functions will be essential to create distinctive client experiences. Decisions will be guided by research, analytics, and performance metrics to understand customer preferences and make informed trade-offs.
The preferred candidate is highly delivery-oriented, strongly focused on user experience, experienced with consumer-facing front-end products, and comfortable working hand in hand with design and data teams to build consumer products.
Responsibilities
- Build strong knowledge of Sotheby’s main business lines and operating model.
- Shape the product vision for client-facing applications using market research, customer interviews, and data analysis.
- Set product priorities and define the roadmap by evaluating ideas against business impact.
- Coordinate with engineering leadership on planning and resource allocation.
- Collaborate with design teams on prototypes, mockups, and user research.
- Partner with data science to define key metrics, test plans, and measurement for individual initiatives.
- Keep projects moving on schedule by leading agile scrum sessions with development teams.
- Present executive-level updates and run stakeholder meetings.
- Draft clear product requirements and concise summaries for new feature launches.
- Build productive relationships across product and business functions.
- Run working-group discussions to make decisions, remove blockers, surface risks, and keep work aligned to business goals and product strategy.
Ideal Experience & Competencies
- 15+ years of product management experience, including at least 7 years in people management.
- Background in a consumer technology environment.
- Track record of launching websites and apps successfully in market.
- Ability to define overall strategy for a cross-functional team while also giving detailed project-level direction.
- Genuine interest in user experience or art.
- Comfort using common product design and product management frameworks.
- Highly organized, collaborative, and adaptable, with the ability to stay calm and professional under tight deadlines.
- Strong judgment, analytical thinking, and attention to detail, with the ability to evaluate trade-offs clearly.
- Skilled listener who can balance stakeholder input while keeping focus on delivering excellent user experiences.
- Data-driven mindset with strong analytical ability.
- Effective in agile environments.
- Excellent writing and communication skills.
- Experience in eCommerce, lifestyle, luxury, or arts is an advantage.
- A technical or quantitative degree is strongly preferred.
- ERP system knowledge is a plus.
