Job description

Role overview

The Trolley Collector position at Gyle Shopping Centre in Edinburgh focuses on keeping shopping trolleys available, orderly, and safely managed across the centre and its car parks. This is a hands-on outdoor job that requires working in all kinds of weather while maintaining strong standards of safety, customer care, and site presentation.

The role is an important part of the customer experience because it helps keep trolley bays organised, prevents obstructions in car parks, and ensures shoppers can access trolleys when they need them.

Working pattern and pay

Shift pattern: 5 days out of 7, 38 hours per week.

Pay rate: Competitive.

Key duties

  • Retrieve shopping trolleys from car parks, outdoor spaces, and allocated collection points around the site.
  • Return trolleys safely and efficiently to customer access areas and trolley bays.
  • Keep trolley storage areas clean, organised, and adequately supplied throughout the day.
  • Remove abandoned trolleys from roads, pedestrian routes, landscaped areas, and other unsuitable locations.
  • Flag damaged or faulty trolleys so they can be repaired or replaced.
  • Help maintain the appearance and cleanliness of external areas.
  • Carry out litter picking and basic housekeeping in designated outdoor zones when needed.
  • Support safe, clear pedestrian and vehicle routes by removing obstructions.
  • Report hazards, defects, and maintenance concerns noticed during patrols.
  • Deliver a friendly, professional service to customers and visitors.
  • Help customers with questions and directions when required.
  • Represent The Gyle positively through professional behaviour and presentation.
  • Assist with centre events and operational tasks when directed.
  • Follow all health and safety procedures and safe working practices.
  • Use trolley collection equipment properly and safely.
  • Stay alert to vehicle and pedestrian movement in the car parks.
  • Report accidents, incidents, near misses, and unsafe situations without delay.
  • Wear all issued PPE and uniform.
  • Work alongside security, cleaning, and centre management teams.
  • Support busy trading periods and special events.
  • Take part in training, toolbox talks, and competency checks.
  • Complete any other reasonable duties linked to the role.

Candidate profile

This role suits someone who is physically fit and comfortable with a demanding manual job involving long periods of walking, pushing, pulling, and outdoor work. You should be dependable, punctual, self-driven, and able to communicate well with customers and colleagues.

A flexible approach is important, as the shift pattern may include weekends and bank holidays. You should also have a strong awareness of health and safety.

Desirable experience

Prior experience in customer service, retail, facilities, or a trolley collection role would be helpful, though it is not stated as essential. A basic understanding of health and safety practices is also desirable.

Benefits

  • Access to a 24/7 GP service for you and your immediate family from home.
  • Mental health support and counselling for major life events.
  • Fitness support through a Get Fit programme.
  • Financial and legal support services.
  • Cycle to work scheme.
  • Access to an employee app with discounts, gift cards, cashback, exclusive offers, wellbeing resources, and crisis support through chat or phone.
