Job description

Role overview

This permanent Transport Planner position is based with a supportive team in Colchester, Essex. The role focuses on coordinating work schedules across the Tarmac business to improve transport efficiency, make the best use of available fleet and supply resources, and maintain a high standard of service for customers.

Key responsibilities

  • Work closely with fleet teams, transport planners and weighbridge colleagues to maximise vehicle use and keep haulier enquiries to a minimum.
  • Ensure both internal and external customers receive consistent communication and strong service levels.
  • Plan the distribution of Tarmac products in a cost-efficient way for internal and external customers.
  • Help maintain customer service levels by planning work in advance and keeping in regular contact with key customers.
  • Respond quickly and effectively when unexpected issues disrupt planned schedules or service commitments.
  • Build programmes that improve the efficiency and utilisation of both internal and external fleet resources.
  • Develop productive relationships with external customers and support the commercial strategy for the area.
  • Share capacity information, forward plans and programme updates clearly with all relevant stakeholders.

Working pattern

This is a Monday to Friday role, with a Saturday morning shift on a rota basis. The Saturday shift is worked from home. Core hours apply, although start and finish times may be adjusted slightly to suit team requirements.

Candidate profile

The successful applicant will have prior experience in a similar transport planning environment and be comfortable handling a busy, changing workload. You should be confident communicating with people at different levels and able to balance priorities while supporting the wider team.

Required experience and capabilities

  • Previous experience in transport planning or a closely related role.
  • Understanding of health and safety procedures.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive customer relationships.
  • Confidence in dealing with stakeholders and customers at different levels.
  • Experience planning work programmes and schedules.
  • Strong IT knowledge and practical computer skills.
  • Ability to reprioritise tasks quickly and manage your own workload.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
