Job description
Role overview
This is a one-year fixed-term trainee position within the Cellular Pathology Department at Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust. The role is reserved for internal RUH employees only and is intended for someone enthusiastic, highly motivated, and comfortable working as part of a team.
The successful candidate will be based in the Histology section, which handles around 31,000 histology cases each year. The department operates from modern facilities in the Herschel Building and holds both IBMS training accreditation and UKAS accreditation.
Purpose of the post
The trainee biomedical scientist will support the processing and investigation of tissue and body fluid samples used in diagnosing, monitoring, and treating patients. Working under the guidance and supervision of qualified staff, the post holder will gain practical experience across routine and specialist diagnostic laboratory work, aligned with national and professional standards.
The role includes completing an agreed one-year training programme in an accredited laboratory environment to progress toward HCPC registration. The training may involve time spent in different laboratories and/or biomedical science disciplines.
Fixed-term and training conditions
This appointment lasts for 1 year, and all training must be completed within that period. There is no guarantee of a permanent qualified Biomedical Scientist post when the training ends or after HCPC registration is achieved.
About the organisation
RUH places people at the centre of its work and aims to make a positive difference for patients, colleagues, and the wider community. The Trust describes itself as one of the top 20 best hospitals to work for in the country and promotes a compassionate, inclusive culture with staff networks, learning and development, innovation, and strong wellbeing support. It also highlights broader staff benefits and the appeal of working in Bath.
Qualifications and experience
Applicants must be internal candidates from RUH and should either hold an IBMS-accredited BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science or be working toward accreditation through top-up modules. The role also requires proven recent practical laboratory experience in Cellular Pathology techniques.
Additional requirements
Candidates must be able to demonstrate knowledge of laboratory safety. The post requires a Disclosure and Barring Service check for unspent criminal convictions. Applicants who do not currently have the right to work in the UK may not be considered unless another right-to-work solution can be arranged. Those who would need sponsorship, including candidates on a graduate visa that will later require sponsorship, are advised to check the government eligibility rules before applying.
