Job description

Role overview

This position is for an experienced tea tasting professional based in Coimbatore. The role focuses on evaluating black tea and Assam tea samples, supporting blend development, and helping maintain quality standards across sourcing and production.

Key responsibilities

  • Carry out expert sensory assessment of black tea and Assam tea samples.
  • Review liquor colour, brightness, aroma, briskness, body, flavour profile, mouthfeel, and aftertaste.
  • Classify teas according to defined quality benchmarks and internal standards.
  • Suggest teas suitable for buying, blending, and client-specific needs.
  • Create and refine tea blends to ensure stable flavour and consistent quality.
  • Collaborate with procurement teams to source tea from auctions, brokers, and tea estates.
  • Check batch-to-batch quality consistency during production.
  • Spot quality gaps and recommend corrective actions.
  • Keep accurate tasting notes, quality logs, and sensory assessment reports.
  • Work with Production, QA, R&D, and Sales teams on new blend development.
  • Observe market movements, seasonal changes in tea, and customer preferences.
  • Attend tea auctions and support supplier assessments when needed.
  • Follow food safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.

Education and experience

A bachelor's degree in Food Technology, Agriculture, Tea Science, or a related field is required. A certification in Tea Tasting or Tea Management will be considered a plus. The role calls for 5 to 10 years of tea tasting experience in tea manufacturing, tea export, blending, or FMCG tea operations. Practical experience with Assam Orthodox, Assam CTC, and black tea varieties is expected, and exposure to procurement or auction buying is preferred.
