Job description
Role overview
AECOM is seeking a Sustainability Consultant to help expand its infrastructure decarbonisation and sustainability advisory work within the Environment and Energy business unit. The position supports a broad portfolio of climate-focused projects across sectors such as transport, energy, defence, water, and the built environment. The role can be based in Basingstoke, Bristol, Edinburgh, London, or Nottingham, and includes flexible hybrid working.
What you will do
- Carry out climate risk, vulnerability, and resilience assessments for infrastructure, energy, utilities, and major development schemes in line with relevant policy and guidance.
- Use knowledge of present and emerging climate threats, including acute and chronic physical risks, and apply climate projections to support decisions.
- Perform qualitative and quantitative climate risk work such as scoring, prioritisation, vulnerability analysis, and impact assessment.
- Create sustainability strategies for clients operating across different sectors.
- Support greenhouse gas assessments following established industry practice.
- Work closely with engineering, planning, environmental, and sustainability colleagues in multidisciplinary project teams.
- Help interpret and apply international and national policy, regulatory obligations, and funding drivers linked to climate resilience and adaptation.
- Lead assigned workstreams, guide junior colleagues, and apply sound professional judgement.
- Assist with business development activity and prepare proposals.
Team context
You will join a team of more than 50 carbon and ESG specialists delivering advisory and implementation services on high-profile climate projects. The group works with transportation operators, energy network providers, renewable energy developers, and water companies to support low-carbon and sustainable outcomes. The role also contributes to the continued growth of the team and its service offering.
Candidate profile
The ideal candidate has an environmental, engineering, or science background, along with practical experience in climate risk and resilience, sustainability delivery, and stakeholder-facing work. A commitment to professional development and interest in chartership are important, as is the ability to work across sectors and handle complex project environments.
Requirements
- Degree in Environmental, Engineering, or Science.
- Working toward, or willing to work toward, chartership with a relevant professional institution, with a commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Understanding of transition climate risks and how they interact with physical risks.
- Awareness of climate-related disclosure and reporting requirements such as TCFD or adaptation reporting.
- Experience in at least one of the following: infrastructure resilience, adaptation of transport infrastructure, energy systems, the built environment, nature-based solutions, or place-based/system-based adaptation approaches.
- Experience using data, geospatial, or digital tools such as GIS and Excel to support climate risk analysis.
- Experience working across different sectors or geographies and adapting methods to suit varied client needs.
- Proven ability to manage defined workstreams or small-to-medium climate risk and resilience or sustainability projects with limited supervision while coordinating junior team members.
- Experience operating in complex stakeholder or regulatory settings, such as public sector bodies, infrastructure owners, or regulators.
- Proactive mindset for improving methods, project efficiency, or service lines.
- Direct client and stakeholder engagement experience, including workshops and discussions focused on climate resilience or sustainability.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders across sectors and regulatory environments.
- Experience supporting proposals and wider business development activity.
- Experience contributing to internal knowledge assets, tools, guidance, or thought leadership connected to climate risk and resilience.
- Willingness to help develop new methodologies, tools, and service offerings.
