Job description
Role Overview
This position leads day-to-day transportation and dispatch activity for inbound and outbound freight in a warehouse and industrial setting. The supervisor coordinates driver schedules, routing, dispatch priorities, equipment readiness, and workflow execution to support customer requirements and strong service levels.
Core Responsibilities
- Direct daily transportation and dispatch operations for both incoming and outgoing freight.
- Plan driver schedules, assign routes, set dispatch priorities, and keep work moving efficiently.
- Improve fleet use, loading efficiency, and route plans to support operational targets.
- Watch schedules closely and adapt plans as customer needs or conditions change.
- Work toward at least 95% on-time delivery while sustaining high service quality.
- Partner with Shipping, Receiving, Operations, and Sales teams to coordinate transportation requirements.
- Oversee fleet availability, maintenance coordination, and equipment utilization.
- Confirm that vehicles and equipment remain safe, compliant, and properly maintained.
- Maintain adherence to DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and other applicable rules and standards.
- Track driver compliance, including hours-of-service, ELD use, licensing, and safety records.
- Carry out safety checks, inspections, and incident reviews, then follow through on corrective actions.
- Promote a workplace culture centered on safety, accountability, and operational performance.
- Monitor and report KPIs such as delivery performance, utilization, cost, productivity, and service levels.
- Spot process gaps and lead continuous improvement efforts.
- Keep transportation records accurate and maintain operational reports.
- Use AS400, Excel, ELD systems, and routing tools for planning, tracking, and reporting.
- Support staffing plans, resource allocation, and general logistics execution.
- Carry out other duties as needed.
Required Experience and Skills
- Proven leadership ability with a track record of building productive teams and work groups.
- Strong sense of initiative, ownership, and purpose in a fast-paced environment.
- Comfortable working under pressure and meeting deadlines consistently.
- Clear communication skills with the ability to interact across all levels of the organization.
- Working knowledge of DOT regulations, fleet management, and logistics operations.
- 2 to 4 years of CDL driving experience.
- 1 to 3 years of forklift experience.
- Availability to work flexible hours and cover operational needs when required.
- Basic computer ability for data entry, inventory systems, and email communication.
- Exposure to warehouse management systems is an advantage.
- Understanding of proper loading, unloading, and stacking methods for steel products.
- Experience with AS400 or similar ERP platforms.
- Familiarity with OMNITRACS or comparable routing software is helpful.
- Intermediate proficiency in MS Excel, Outlook, and Word.
- Basic arithmetic skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Physical Requirements
This role requires occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs (22.7 kg) and frequent lifting or carrying of items up to 25 lbs (11.3 kg). Safe lifting practices and proper technique are important to reduce strain and prevent injury. Reasonable accommodation may be provided where appropriate.
Work Environment
The job is based in a warehouse environment and involves time spent in the warehouse, plant, and heavy metal processing center. It also requires prolonged exposure to outdoor areas and non-climate-controlled conditions. Reasonable accommodation may be provided where appropriate.
