Role Summary
The Student Success Advisor supports online learners from their first inquiry through graduation, helping create a clear and consistent student experience. The role focuses on academic planning, student satisfaction, persistence, and retention for online and flex students.
Work Location and Schedule
This position can be performed remotely from an approved alternate work location. To qualify, candidates must live in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, or Wyoming. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Mountain Time, and the role requires live support through Zoom, chat, and email while also completing priority tasks. Visa sponsorship is not available.
About the Department
The Division of Extended Studies exists to broaden access to higher education beyond the traditional campus model. Its teams support online learning, community-based programs, concurrent enrollment, summer sessions, continuing education, and other lifelong learning opportunities. The Boise State Online advising team works with online and flex students across the full student journey, helping them start strong, stay on track, and celebrate graduation.
What You Will Do
- Advise students in an online degree program on course planning, registration, add/drop actions, and university paperwork.
- Guide admitted students through Boise State orientation, class selection, registration, textbook ordering, and readiness for the start of classes.
- Monitor enrollment, degree planning, and progress toward completion.
- Review academic standing and degree requirements with students at key milestones, helping them identify next steps and important deadlines.
- Support students who are facing academic challenges by encouraging growth-oriented habits and stronger academic decision-making.
- Continuously improve advising services by refining internal workflows, resources, procedures, and published materials.
- Apply university and online-program policies, rules, and regulations when advising students.
- Partner with program coordinators, field advisors, faculty, and support staff to deliver coordinated student support.
- Use judgment to evaluate student needs, determine the right information or referral, resolve issues, and adapt communication to each situation.
- Stay adaptable as program details, processes, and priorities change quickly.
- Help students prepare for online learning by offering guidance on time management, online communication, Canvas, and general readiness for virtual classes.
- Communicate regularly and professionally with students by phone, email, and virtual tools.
- Act as a student services resource by sharing accurate information about registration, graduation, transfer credit, degree requirements, tutoring, financial aid, payment, course materials, testing, counseling, and community resources.
- Resolve student issues by investigating concerns, consulting experts, presenting options, and deciding on the appropriate next action.
- Contribute to enrollment, retention, and graduation outcomes for the assigned programs and the university.
- Support prospective students by answering questions about online degree programs, admissions, financial aid, online learning, and academic pathways.
- Explain admission procedures clearly and follow up with applicants so they complete required university and program steps.
- Work with the Student Success team to coordinate follow-up messaging and ensure consistency in communication.
- Strengthen recruitment efforts by helping attract applicants who are a strong match for online and flex programs.
- Build respectful, collaborative relationships with internal and external partners, including academic leaders, faculty, service offices, transfer centers, advisors, and administrative staff.
- Manage multiple projects, adapt to shifting priorities, and perform effectively under pressure.
- Deliver responsive customer service, listen actively, and address concerns from colleagues, stakeholders, and supervisors.
- Work both independently and as part of a team, remain open to direction, and quickly learn and share new knowledge as needed.

Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Master’s degree in an appropriate field from an accredited college or university.
- 2 years of academic advising experience in higher education.
- 1 year of experience with degree planning and course sequencing in higher education.
- 1 year of experience using PeopleSoft or a comparable student information system.
- 1 year of experience using Slate or a similar CRM platform.
- 1 year of experience advising military student populations.
- Ability to work Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Mountain Time.
- Must live in one of the approved states listed for remote eligibility.
- Not eligible for visa sponsorship.
Compensation and Benefits
The annual salary for this position is $51,584.
- 12 paid holidays, plus a university closure between Christmas and New Year’s that requires 3 vacation days.
- 12 to 24 paid vacation days per year for full-time Professional and Classified staff, depending on job type and years of service.
- 10.76% university contribution to the ORP retirement fund for Professional and Faculty employees.
