Business Focus

The organisation delivers projects in Oil & Gas and Power while expanding into the energy transition space through hydrogen, clean fuels, and carbon capture. Its work also incorporates digitalisation, AI, and robotics, with a strong emphasis on efficiency, sustainability, legal compliance, and ethical conduct.

Role Overview

The Steel Structure Superintendent is responsible for leading and coordinating steel structure construction activities executed by subcontractors, supported by construction supervisors typically assigned by area. The role serves as the main interface with the subcontractor and ensures that the assigned scope is delivered within budget, on schedule, and in line with required quality standards and HSE expectations.

This position also requires close coordination with other disciplines, including construction, engineering, and procurement, to resolve site issues affecting steel structure work. The superintendent is accountable for the timely completion of construction activities and for ensuring that all work follows the approved execution plan. Any conflicts or required changes must be escalated promptly to the project team for resolution.

Core Duties

  • Study the latest IFC drawings, engineering instructions, method statements, and the steel structure schedule to supervise site execution effectively and maintain control over time, quality, and cost.
  • Coordinate weekly meetings with the subcontractor to confirm and consolidate the upcoming week’s activities, keeping the weekly plan aligned with the overall project schedule and current work front.
  • Support planning and production control teams in revising the current steel structure plan or preparing updated forecast plans.
  • Confirm that steel structure supervisors clearly understand the subcontractor’s scope and that daily targets are set according to the project schedule; distribute workloads among supervisors based on weekly targets.
  • Verify that daily production is assessed by each supervisor and entered into the system on a daily basis, while seeking clarifications to prevent mismatches with planning records and protect the reliability of reported progress.
  • Assess supervisor performance, strengthen their capabilities, organise the workflow, and ensure responsibilities are understood and assigned correctly.
  • Check that sufficient subcontractor manpower is available for each task and that labour is being used productively on site.
  • Ensure supervisors are familiar with company tools and procedures and use them consistently in daily work; report manpower deployed at site every day.
  • Confirm in advance that tools and site access requirements such as scaffolding and roads are available for planned daily activities.
  • Monitor material sent to the subcontractor, oversee efficient usage, and apply proper handling and preservation methods to avoid damage or deterioration while reducing storage time on site.
  • Provide daily site coordination with the subcontractor, inspect work areas in person, and validate FEWOs with supporting information for reliable evidence generation.
  • Where applicable, check and track compliance with work time sheets completed by supervisors, ensuring accuracy in the hours charged for the activity.
  • Where applicable, review vendor assistance man-hours and keep them to the contractual minimum; vendor technicians must not replace supervisors due to negligence or lack of competence.
  • Although not authorised to enter into commercial agreements such as subcontracts, change orders, or work authorisations, the superintendent must support the subcontract department by identifying subcontractor deficiencies and negligence, and by ensuring full compliance with contractual scope.
  • Participate actively in technical discussions, site queries, and agreements with engineering and the client to remove recurring site issues and reduce rework while improving productivity.
  • Ensure red-marked drawings from the subcontractor include all as-built changes accurately, and implement ITPs and other company procedures effectively at site.
  • Drive site quality control programmes to secure proper completion of construction activities, and promote mock-ups and toolbox talks with subcontractors, supervisors, and quality inspectors before starting new work so expectations on specifications, standards, and method statements are clearly understood.
  • Prevent rework by ensuring checkpoint inspections are completed by QC and supervisors, and reinforce ownership of this responsibility within the supervisor team.
  • As the senior site responsible for this discipline, maintain clean, orderly work areas in line with HSE requirements and good site practices.
  • Take an active role in HSE programmes and campaigns to build a strong safety culture among subcontractor and supervisor teams.
  • Steer the work toward mechanical completion in coordination with PMCs and commissioning priorities, once agreed with the Construction Manager.
  • Oversee subcontractor punch list close-out for steel structure works during handover.
  • Encourage supervisors to capture and report lessons learned throughout the project so they can be uploaded into the corporate lessons-learned system.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree or diploma in Civil, Structural, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • At least 15 years of construction experience, with 7 to 10 years specifically in steel structure supervision or superintendent positions.
  • Strong hands-on experience in structural steel erection, fabrication, installation, alignment, and bolting.
  • Background in EPC projects within Oil & Gas, LNG, Petrochemical, Power Plant, or industrial construction environments.
  • Proven ability to manage subcontractors, construction supervisors, and multidisciplinary site teams.
  • Capability to work closely with Engineering, Procurement, Planning, Quality, Commissioning, and client stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Comfort working in multicultural environments and handling several priorities under demanding schedules.
  • Fluency in English.
