Job description

Role overview

An opportunity is available for Band 5 staff nurses to join a nurse-led Level 1 Special Care Baby Unit. The unit has 12 beds and provides care for babies born from 30 weeks’ gestation onwards. This is a rota-based position that includes day, night, weekend, and public holiday shifts, with variable hours available.

Main purpose of the role

The successful nurse will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and take responsibility for assessing care needs, planning and evaluating care, and helping deliver high-quality, family-centred treatment for neonates and their families.

Working style and expectations

Strong communication, organisation, and interpersonal abilities are essential, along with the capability to prioritise tasks and manage workload effectively.

Training and development

The trust supports ongoing professional growth and encourages staff to take part in suitable courses and training relevant to the post. Applicants with neonatal experience or qualifications will have an advantage, but newly qualified nurses and those seeking a career change are also encouraged to develop within this specialist area.

Team and organisation

You will join a close, supportive team committed to delivering the highest standards of care for babies and families. The organisation places strong emphasis on staff education, development, and retention, and is recognised for high staff satisfaction.

About the trust

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust operates three major locality hospitals at North Tyneside, Wansbeck, and Hexham, along with several smaller community hospitals and clinics from Tynemouth to Berwick upon Tweed. It also runs the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital and provides care in patients’ homes and local community facilities. The trust focuses on helping people stay independent at home where possible, reducing unnecessary hospital admissions, and delivering an outstanding patient experience.

The organisation may close this vacancy before the stated closing date if enough suitable applications are received.
