Role overview
Beaumont Hospital is recruiting a Staff Nurse for its Operating Theatre/Perioperative Complex. This is a permanent position based at Beaumont Hospital and St Joseph’s Hospital, Raheny. The post reports to a Clinical Nurse Manager 1/2/3 and is offered on the Staff Nurse grade in line with Government pay policy.
The role involves supporting patients throughout the perioperative pathway, including before, during, and after surgery. The successful nurse will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to provide safe, compassionate, and patient-focused care, while also building specialist competence in perioperative nursing.
Hours and contract
This is a permanent full-time role with a working pattern of 37.5 hours per week.
Key duties
The nurse will be expected to manage perioperative care needs, maintain high standards of safety and quality, and work in accordance with NMBI standards, Beaumont Hospital values, and local policies and procedures. The post also requires active participation in the preparation of clinical areas, completion of safety checks, accurate documentation, communication with the multidisciplinary team, and support for junior staff where appropriate.
Clinical responsibilities
- Act within the limits of personal scope of practice, the Code of Professional Conduct, and hospital policies and competencies.
- Follow Beaumont Hospital standard operating procedures and related policy requirements at all times.
- Build specialist capability in the assigned perioperative area, such as scrub/circulating or anaesthetic/recovery nursing.
- Protect patient safety and deliver care consistent with national and local guidance and evidence-based practice.
- Prepare theatre or clinical areas for incoming perioperative patients and complete required checks.
- Observe patients continuously as needed and escalate relevant changes to the nurse in charge.
- Carry out procedures carefully, completely, and safely in line with hospital standards.
- Maintain clear, accurate, timely, and legally compliant records.
- Uphold confidentiality, dignity, and data protection obligations, including GDPR requirements.
- Support risk management, incident reporting, audits, and data collection activities.
- Assist in supervising junior nursing staff and contribute leadership and teaching support.
- Adapt efficiently in a changing clinical environment.
Communication and professional practice
- Communicate clearly and professionally with patients and all members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Report unsafe or unprofessional conduct to the CNM or line manager.
- Promote respect, dignity, and good workplace relationships.
- Take responsibility for ongoing professional development and stay updated on nursing trends and practices.
- Deliver nursing care responsibly and remain accountable for actions and omissions.
- Apply evidence-based practice within perioperative nursing.
- Respect the cultural and religious needs of patients and colleagues.
- Be punctual and dependable for assigned and confirmed shifts.
- Complete mandatory online and practical training as required by hospital policy.
Management and education
- Organise care effectively for a caseload of patients alongside the multidisciplinary team.
- Use time efficiently and show initiative in daily work.
- Help maintain standards of care and quality assurance initiatives.
- Work in line with hospital policies and keep effective links with support services and other departments.
- Complete the required local orientation programme.
- Support a learning culture and encourage professional growth.
- Keep up with developments in nursing to strengthen knowledge and skills.
- Undertake continuing professional development in line with the NMBI Competency Framework.
- Commit to relevant courses, the local education pathway, and other study days to enhance practice.
- After suitable training, act as a teacher and preceptor for nursing staff and students in the department.

Eligibility and selection criteria
Candidates should be registered in the General Division of the Register of Nurses and kept on the Live Register with the National Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). The hospital will shortlist using the required registration/qualification details and other desirable criteria if the number of applications is high.
Desirable experience and development
Recent Operating Department Nursing experience is preferred. A relevant postgraduate course in perioperative nursing is also desirable.
