About the Organization
The National Basketball Players Association is the labor union representing professional basketball players in the NBA. Since 1954, it has worked to safeguard and strengthen player rights. Its role includes negotiating collective bargaining agreements, handling player grievances, and advising players on benefits as well as educational and post-playing career paths.

The position is based in New York, New York and follows a hybrid work arrangement. It sits within the Finance department and reports to the Assistant Controller.
Role Overview
The Staff Accountant supports the organization’s accounting activities across the board. This includes maintaining account balances, preparing financial statements, managing general ledger activity, and contributing to financial reporting. The role works closely with colleagues across all levels of the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Support month-end and year-end closing activities, along with general ledger maintenance.
- Create journal entries and ensure transactions comply with US GAAP.
- Assist the Finance Manager with accounts receivable tasks.
- Help prepare consolidated monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in line with US GAAP.
- Analyze financial performance and prepare variance explanations.
- Help improve procedures and efficiency, including opportunities for automation.
- Work with internal teams to strengthen communication and coordination between Finance and other departments.
- Assist in collecting and organizing financial records for managers.
- Prepare support documents for audits and tax submissions.
- Reconcile accounts, investigate differences, and resolve outstanding issues.
- Provide additional support through ad hoc financial analysis and special projects as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
- 2–3 years of prior experience as an accountant or auditor for public companies.
- Strong computer proficiency, especially advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Solid understanding of finance, accounting, budgeting, and GAAP.
- Advanced knowledge of bookkeeping practices, accounting standards, and applicable state and national regulations.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and meet deadlines.
- Strong analytical abilities and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- CPA certification is preferred.
- Experience with Sage Intacct at an intermediate to advanced level is a plus.
- Strong project management and process improvement capabilities.
- Comfort working in a cross-functional, complex, and fast-moving environment.

Compensation and Benefits
