Job description
Role overview
This FBI special agent position has been exempted from the federal civilian hiring freeze. The role is centered on using analytical thinking, strong judgment, and data-driven problem solving to support national security and public safety investigations. The Bureau is looking for someone who can apply experience from an education or teaching background to uncover patterns, interpret complex information, and contribute to investigations involving violent crime, cyber threats, terrorism, fraud, and other emerging risks.
The position is designed for professionals who are ready to shift their expertise into federal law enforcement. You will work in a challenging environment that calls for adaptability, resilience, and the ability to operate across varied investigative situations. In return, the FBI offers growth opportunities, competitive pay, comprehensive benefits, and a supportive workplace with flexibility and resources.
How your background fits
Your experience in education and teaching has likely strengthened your ability to process information, connect details, and make sound decisions. Skills developed through work such as Adobe Photoshop, tutoring, early childhood education, machine learning, leadership development, and work with children can translate into stronger observation, interpretation, and analytical capability in the special agent role.
At the FBI, those abilities are applied to evidence, patterns, and critical facts. The role is a chance to move beyond supporting work and into a position where your decisions help determine outcomes in high-stakes investigations.
Major duties
- Lead and support investigations into possible violations of federal law, cybersecurity incidents, and threats to public safety.
- Use sound judgment, initiative, and flexibility to respond to changing investigative needs.
- Build and maintain working relationships with federal, state, local, tribal, territorial, and international law enforcement partners.
- Maintain the physical conditioning needed to carry out law enforcement responsibilities.
Application requirements
Applicants must complete the full application process and upload all required documents. The resume should clearly list relevant experience with start and end dates and must be no longer than two pages.
Depending on eligibility, additional documents may include college transcripts, a DD 214 for veterans, or DD 214, SF-15, and a VA letter dated 1991 or later for disabled veterans. Transcripts are required for anyone qualifying through education or where an education requirement applies.
Salary and compensation
The pay range for this role is $103,236 to $133,200. Compensation is based on base pay, locality pay, and availability pay.
Eligibility and equal opportunity
Candidates must be U.S. citizens, able to obtain a Top Secret Sensitive Compartmented Information clearance, willing to travel as needed, and able to meet the FBI’s employment eligibility standards. Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from a U.S.-accredited college or university, preferably in education or a related field. All degrees must be verified through official transcripts.
The FBI is an equal opportunity employer and considers all qualified applicants without discrimination on the basis of protected characteristics or other non-merit factors.
