Job description
Overview
ENERCON’s Federal Services Advanced Design and Manufacturing (ADM) group is looking for a 3D Designer who can turn complex engineering ideas into practical, high-quality design outputs. In this position, you will develop 3D models and detailed drawings that help support design and upgrade work for DOE facilities.
This opportunity may be based in one of these locations: Kennewick, WA; Naperville, IL (Chicago area); Overland Park, KS; Kennesaw, GA (Atlanta area); Fort Worth, TX; Aiken, SC; or Dallas, TX.
Role Summary
You will contribute to advanced design work by producing precise model-based drawings, coordinating with engineering teams, and helping maintain quality across deliverables. The role combines technical drafting, multi-discipline collaboration, and attention to compliance and project schedules.
Responsibilities
- Create detailed 3D models and engineering drawings for facility layouts, equipment additions, and system changes.
- Develop and update deliverables such as P&IDs, PFDs, HVAC layouts, CE&I diagrams, isometrics, single-line diagrams, and related support drawings.
- Assist in the design of nuclear and industrial equipment, including gloveboxes, hot cells, shielded enclosures, and remotely operated mechanical systems.
- Work with mechanical, civil, electrical, instrumentation & controls, and process teams to refine design concepts and solve layout issues.
- Support facility and process improvements that enhance operations, safety, DOE cleanup work, and SMR program objectives.
- Review your own drawings and models carefully to catch issues early and maintain accuracy.
- Review peer work and help guide junior drafters or designers when needed.
- Maintain redline documentation such as ECNs and FCNs and follow internal as well as client design requirements.
- Balance creative design thinking with compliance to safety expectations, engineering principles, and DOE/NRC criteria.
- Deliver work according to schedule and occasionally travel for short site visits or credentialing needs.
Requirements
- One of the following is required: an associate degree with at least 6 years of experience, a high school diploma with at least 10 years of experience, or a bachelor’s degree with at least 2 years of design experience.
- Advanced capability with SmartPlant 3D, Smart 3D, or Octave Forte 3D.
- Strong interest in mechanical, piping, equipment, or facility design, especially for complex or first-of-a-kind systems.
- Working knowledge of engineering discipline practices and cross-discipline coordination.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to contribute effectively in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Familiarity with applicable design codes, standards, and technical criteria.
- Ability to learn new tools and adjust to changing project needs.
- U.S. citizenship is required.
- Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without current or future employer sponsorship.
- Employment is subject to pre-employment and random drug/alcohol screening, background checks, and annual motor vehicle record reviews.
Compensation
The expected salary range for this role is USD 65,000 to USD 130,000 per year.
