Job description

Role overview

Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is hiring a Sleep Physiologist to join its Sleep Disorder Centre and support the delivery of sleep diagnostics and treatment services. This is a Band 5 post suited to a recent graduate in respiratory physiology or someone with a related healthcare degree.

Working pattern

The position calls for strong teamwork and a willingness to adapt to flexible schedules, including night shifts and other shift-based duties. Overnight work is an important part of the role.

Key clinical duties

You will work alongside physiologists, technicians, consultants, pharmacists, and an internal admin/booking team to support patient care. Core tasks include conducting unsupervised overnight full and limited respiratory polysomnography for patients with a variety of sleep conditions such as sleep disordered breathing, REM and non-REM parasomnias, sleep movement disorders, and secondary sleep disorders linked to neurological and general medical conditions.

You will analyse test data, produce detailed reports, provide a range of additional physiological investigations, and present findings clearly. You will also coordinate with consultants on diagnosis and treatment decisions.

Another important part of the role is initiating patients on CPAP during overnight set-ups and adjusting therapy based on physiological results and patient feedback. This requires regular night duty and shift working.

Additional responsibilities

The role also includes keeping stock and equipment at appropriate levels, giving technical guidance, supporting patients after their appointments in person or by phone, maintaining accurate clinical notes and databases, and contributing to departmental research and audit activity.

About the hospital

Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is rated Good overall with Outstanding care by the CQC. It is a specialist NHS hospital known for reconstructive surgery, burns care, and rehabilitation services across the South of England and beyond.

The hospital has a strong reputation for advanced techniques and treatments, consistently good clinical outcomes, and very high patient satisfaction.
