Job description

About Expel

Expel creates product experiences that make complex information easier to understand, support better decisions, and help teams work more effectively. User experience is treated as a core advantage here, not a side task, and the function has strong support from senior leadership. The team works with a straightforward, low-politics culture focused on building the best possible experience for customers.

Role Overview

Expel is hiring a Senior UX Designer who brings strong interaction design capability and a genuine interest in technically complex problem spaces. This role is well suited to someone who enjoys learning directly from users, working with analytics and experimentation, and transforming complicated challenges into simple, practical workflows.

What You Will Do

  • Lead discovery work, research, and feature shaping, staying involved through development, release, and adoption.
  • Improve the Workbench product, which helps analysts make decisions quickly and share those decisions with customers.
  • Study users and market context to understand personas, scenarios, and jobs to be done.
  • Turn research findings into clear insights and share them with teammates and leadership.
  • Partner closely with engineers to understand technical limits and identify room for creative testing.
  • Create lean experiments to validate hypotheses, measure results, and refine solutions quickly.
  • Contribute to product vision and help steer the team toward the most important problems and best solutions.
  • Work alongside product management, engineering, UX, and Secure Operations leadership to support product scale.

What Makes This Team Different

  • A collaborative, supportive culture with a manager who advocates for the team.
  • A workplace that values inclusion, diversity, and the freedom to speak openly.
  • A defined growth path toward either people management or technical leadership.
  • A generous annual budget for conferences and training.
  • Regular feedback through weekly 1:1s, half-year performance reviews, and both formal and informal critique sessions with the UX team.
  • Frequent access to customers and opportunities to carry out meaningful research.
  • Strong engineering partners who are open to fast iteration and experimentation.

What You Bring

  • Deep UX practice across research, prototyping, interaction design, design systems, and workshop facilitation.
  • Comfort working with engineers on technical details when needed.
  • Experience designing workflows and presenting information in ways that support informed decisions.
  • Ability to sketch and prototype quickly, test ideas early, and discard directions that do not work.
  • Clear communication of problem framing, design trade-offs, and the impact of different solution paths.
  • Confidence making decisions with incomplete information and learning from mistakes along the way.
  • Strong stakeholder communication that keeps partners aligned on current work and future direction.

Experience and Education

You should have at least 4 years of experience on a cross-functional product team working with product managers and engineers. Experience in cybersecurity is preferred but not mandatory. Backgrounds in SaaS, e-commerce, productivity software, or industrial applications are considered beneficial. You should also be comfortable using mainstream UX tools such as Figma or Adobe XD; the team uses Figma. A bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience is required.

Additional Notes

This is a fully remote role for someone based in Ireland. Although the company is headquartered in Herndon, Virginia, the team operates globally and collaborates primarily through remote tools. The team meets in Dublin about once a month when in-person collaboration is useful, and also holds Dublin team touchpoints three to four times per year, including participation from colleagues in other locations and team activities.

Compensation

The base salary for this role is €77,600 to €112,500 per year, plus bonus eligibility and equity.
