Job description
About ASOS
ASOS is a global fashion marketplace built for people who want to express themselves freely. The company encourages individuality, creativity and an inclusive culture where team members can bring their authentic selves to work. ASOS also supports candidates who may need reasonable adjustments during recruitment as part of its Disability Confident commitment.
Role Overview
The finance team sits at the core of ASOS and plays a hands-on, business-facing role rather than a purely transactional one. In this position, you will focus on inventory accounting and stock-related controls, helping the business make sound decisions and supporting ASOS’s wider growth as an online fashion destination.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and keep up-to-date a strong understanding of group stock operations across retail, warehousing and accounts payable.
- Own the accounting for stock-related entries, using detailed transactional data and turning it into concise reporting for stakeholders, with input from Commercial Finance.
- Apply the correct accounting approach for stock cost elements, including weighted average cost and stock capitalisation.
- Work with Commercial Finance to account for stock provisions, applying consistent judgement in line with group policy.
- Partner with Accounts Payable to ensure stock GRNI balances are complete and accurate.
- Apply IFRS requirements for inventory and provide practical technical guidance where needed.
- Contribute to testing and financial assessment of warehouse and operational change projects, such as new warehouses, return centres and system changes.
- Prepare and maintain stock balance sheet reconciliations with clear, value-adding commentary.
- Help maintain a strong control environment across all inventory-related areas.
- Document stock controls, processes and risks, identify weaknesses and suggest improvements.
- Support end-to-end stock lifecycle changes, including documentation, impact assessment, delivery and training support where needed.
- Assist with interim and year-end audit requirements by providing audit-ready information within agreed timelines.
- Communicate clearly with stakeholders in Financial Control, Commercial Finance, Operations and Technology, giving timely updates and well-reasoned accounting explanations.
- Support projects and change programmes that affect inventory accounting by providing analysis, accounting input and financial impact assessments.
- Carry out ad hoc analysis and support requests from the Finance Manager to help deliver business objectives.
- Champion Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as part of the team culture.
Working Style
ASOS works in a hybrid rhythm that includes spending at least three days each week in the office. The aim is to strengthen collaboration, speed up decision-making and help people learn from each other more quickly.
Candidate Profile
This role suits a qualified accountant who can work confidently with inventory, controls and stakeholder management in a fast-moving environment. You should be comfortable using professional judgement, explaining complex accounting issues in simple terms and improving processes while maintaining a strong control framework.
Requirements
- Qualified accountant status such as ACA, ACCA or an equivalent qualification.
- Previous exposure to retail or stock-led businesses is helpful, though not essential.
- Strong practical knowledge of IFRS and the ability to apply it effectively.
- Experience preparing for and responding to internal and external audits in a structured way.
- Proven ability to work with non-finance colleagues across different business functions.
- Comfort dealing with senior stakeholders in a professional and thoughtful manner.
- Sound judgement when working with estimates, assumptions and management decisions, with escalation when appropriate.
- Ability to explain complex accounting topics to both finance and non-finance audiences.
- Experience working in a fast-paced, changing environment while managing competing priorities and deadlines.
- A proactive approach to simplifying processes and improving ways of working without weakening controls.
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to step back and see the bigger picture.
- Strong data analysis skills using Excel and other analytical tools; SQL experience is an advantage but not required.
- Collaborative behaviour and support for ASOS values, including Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Benefits
- Employee discount on ASOS products.
- Employee sample sales.
- 25 days of paid annual leave, plus an additional celebration day for a special occasion.
- Private medical insurance scheme.
- A fixed annual payment on top of salary each year as an additional thank-you.
- Access to personalised learning and learning in the moment to help you grow and perform well in the role.
Additional Information
ASOS values face-to-face collaboration and asks employees to be in the office at least three days per week. Candidates can also find more insight into working life at ASOS through the company’s social channels.
